Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHere it is, persecution of American Conservative Christians has finally started. Crucifying? No.
Fed to lions? Nope. Burning at the stake? Incorrect.
But... celebrating a parody holiday? IT'S JUST LIKE NORTH KOREA UP IN HERE!!!1!
Today, the far-right website WorldNetDaily interviewed Fox News host Gretchen Carlson and Fred Thompson, the former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate, about their roles in the new film Persecuted, a thriller about looming anti-Christian oppression in the U.S.
While Thompson pointed to Obamacare and the Hobby Lobby case as examples of the government persecuting Christians, Carlson once again highlighted the real force crushing the freedoms of Christians in America: Seinfeld.
She told WorldNetDaily that Festivus, the secular holiday popularized by the 1997 Seinfeld episode The Strike, is helping erode Americas heritage and strip our society of certain things that have been in existence for a long time.
Carlson also pointed to a lack of Christmas spirit and a dearth of tourists viewing a copy of the Bill of Rights on a recent visit she took to Washington D.C. as a sign of looming anti-Christian oppression.

(16,079 posts)She does understand that the US Constitution was the result of the Bill of Rights? And that the Declaration of Independence is the document that the founders created to justify our breaking off from the British Empire?
This woman needs to stop using the cheap hair dye, because it's evidently killing what few brain cells she has left...and expected better of Thompson...what disappointment he turned out to be...maybe he needs to keep selling those reverse mortgages and just ride into the sunset...

(4,788 posts)the Bill of Rights are amendments to the Constitution. So, technically it is the result of the Constitution, not the other way around. But I know what you mean. Peroxide - it kills brain cells and she doesn't have many to spare.

(182,826 posts)I'm talking about while it was on. I worked for a guy who wanted to get into Va politics but was thwarted at his first effort and gave it up. There were always Repubs around (other situations too) and any discussion of Seinfeld included 2 or more people making sure everyone knew that they had never watched it. It was almost a litmus test. No idea what their huge problem with it was (too Jewish? Premarital sex?).
Now I just say something ironic, sometimes nonoffensively sarcastic, and whomever doesn't seem to get it almost always turns out to be a conservative.

(9,748 posts)Rural folk are better human beings than city folk. Blue collar workers are better people than white collar employees. These are generally** accepted facts among rural and/or blue collar circles.
They did not want to watch a show about the lives of such people. Had they known that it actually made fun of those people, they might have watched. Probably not, though. They wouldn't have understood much of what occurred. And too much of it would have been offensive.
Masturbation is a perfect example. It is something that does not exist. Hence, no reason to mention it. Maybe, just maybe, you might use the concept to make fun of someone like, "that guy's such a loser he probably masturbates". Because, you see, only losers who can not get laid masturbate. No real man or woman would ever do such a thing.
I ran into a guy in a bar in a small town in southern Indiana once who said he'd just got back from the doctor to get "relieved". He hadn't gotten laid in such a long time that he actually paid for a doctor visit where they used a needle to relieve the pressure. I asked why he didn't just masturbate.
This naturally led to a discussion on whether I prefer my babies deep fried or grilled when eating them.
Sometimes I hate having grown up with people like this. I hate knowing how they think. Understanding them makes me worried that something is wrong with my brain.
**Let me not apologize if anyone takes offense. I like my non-apologies to be really unapologetic. Besides, you chose to ignore "generally", so it's your own damn fault.

Hoooraaay! The War on Christmas in July!!!
And you know what?
In a way, she's right!
I fucking hate Christmas. It's become a consumer orgy. It's fine for little kids, but I don't have any little kids, and there aren't any in the extended family any more. Have tried to opt out for a couple of decades now. Probably since around '97. Sometimes I get sucked back in to a degree, sometimes I manage to keep it to little more than dinner with the family, which I enjoy. But 2 months of it? Meh. However, every year now, Sweetie and I "celebrate" Festivus, on the 23rd, where it belongs. And each year more and more friends join us.
And why is this? We are, in fact CONSCIOULY trying to "'erode' Americas 'heritage' and 'strip our society of certain things that have been in existence for a long time.'" Absolutely, we are doing this. Its time to get rid of the bullshit, and replace it with things that are either not bullshit or are COMPLETELY bullshit. Festivus is the perfect example of the latter. I love made up holidays, and Festivus, along with Pi Day and Talk Like a Pirate Day, are my favorites.
And frankly, it think it might be time to ACTUALLY persecute some "Christians."
Not the real ones, who try to emulate Christ in their daily lives.
The fake ones. The ones who use it as a tool of demagoguery. You know who I talking about.
Absolutely, it is time to persecute those fucking people.
They need to be shunned, laughed at, and not allowed to participate in polite society.
They need to be sent back to the margins and the depths, where they came from and where they belong.

Things like this get me to want to ask them that if they think their religion is that weak and easily displaced, why do they adhere to it themselves?

(42,564 posts)Very interesting book, but the point I found most interesting--after she neatly laid out her case that virtually all of the stories of Christian martyrs are fictional--is that the stories of persecution were almost all created AFTER Christianity was well on its way to becoming the dominant religion in the West. Even then, powerful church leaders were obsessed with portraying themselves as persecuted.
