GOP congressman finds Honduras too scary to leave his hotel, but perfectly fine to send kids back to. http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2014/07/steve-pearce-honduras-safe

Per the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Congressman Steve Pearce said Wednesday that most immigrants from Central America who are crossing illegally into the United States are driven by economic reasons, not fear of physical danger in their homeland.

Pearce said he and the rest of the House delegation that visited Honduras and Guatemala did not venture from their hotel very often because of the dangers, but the message they received in both countries was consistent: "Send back our children."

So to recap: Tegucigalpa is too dangerous for grown members of Congress to leave their downtown hotel rooms, but a perfectly fine place to send an eight-year-old kid. (According to a press release, the congressional delegation did leave their hotel to visit an outreach center funded by the US government. They also met with the president and first lady of Honduras.) Meanwhile, not content with the results of Pearce's investigation, a rival Congressional delegation, led by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), is en route to Central America now. We'll see if they find it safe enough to walk around.

Pearce is shaking in his boots and shouting it out from his bunker in Tegucigalpa.

all the while he was accompanied by “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead.” Still photographs provided by the military to NBC News seemed to show McCain wearing a bulletproof vest during his visit.

Ah, of such metal are our brave politicians molded.

I wonder who Pearce was talking to because that wasn't the message from the Guatemalan First Lady during her visit to Arizona.

And I'm sure the gangs in both countries would have that message ... much like the message from the antebellum South was consistent: "Send back on slaves."

Well we know how his dog and pony show will look like, calling up images of Mccain in Baghdad.. then to be given wide media footage on cable. Yeah, ok. Won't say more of what I'm actually thinking.

If your whole mission in life is "protecting life," then wouldn't this be a great time to intervene and make a difference?

I feel so badly for these kids and have a special place in my heart for the ones in Honduras. My son went on a mission trip with a group from school to Montana de Luz in 2011. The Rotary Club tries to go every year, depending on conditions there. It is an "orphanage" for kids with HIV/AIDS. Beautiful children and a beautiful country. There are 800 photos in this computer's iphoto, but I'm too computer illiterate to post them.

He gave up spring break to go and had the most wonderful experience. The next summer they called him again, because they knew he had a passport and he went to the Dominican Republic to fit prosthetic hands.
