NYT map graphics on the MH17 attack -- good reference

There's been a lot of discussion (and confusion) about airspace, flight paths, etc. The NYT has some very good map graphics showing a history of flight paths for several major airlines, the restricted zones defined by FAA and Eurocontrol, and locations of recent fighting.

It's a good reference to keep in mind as we discuss this tragedy.

According to the first map - "Hours before the crash, Russia closed four airways near the Ukrainian border, including one that was a continuation of Flight 17’s route."

"Hours before the crash"

Was that before or after the plane left Amsterdam?

When were the air traffic control agencies informed that those lanes were closed (and how long did it take that info to filter down to the control centers)?

Where was MH17 supposed to go once it crossed over onto the closed airway?
