Outside spending has been particularly focused on North Carolinas Senate race since the beginning of the 2014 campaign cycle. Groups not affiliated with the candidates, but working to help boost or defeat them, have spent a combined $11.46 million on the race between incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan and Republican challenger Thom Tillis, the speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives. In Mississippi, outside groups spent about $11.7 million on the race between GOP Sen. Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel, the Tea-Party backed challenger whom Cochran narrowly defeated in a runoff last month.
