Rules for thee, but not for me.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy who struck and killed a bicyclist in December while driving was texting on his cellphone, or using the cruisers computer.

Hi guys, let's take a minute and talk about Distracted Drivers. You know, the folks you like to ticket for holding a phone to their ear while driving.

Deputy Andrew Wood sent six text messages from his personal cellphone about the time authorities said the crash happened on Dec. 8, 2013 just after 1 p.m., the Daily News said, citing subpoenaed cellphone records attached to an affidavit in support of a search warrant filed with Los Angeles Superior Court in May.

Witnesses said that the deputy's car failed to negotiate a curve and no brake lights were seen before the collision. Wood has declined to comment, the Daily News reported.

So it was one in the afternoon, which is broad daylight. The deputy was driving about on a curving road, reading his computer in the cruiser, and using his cell phone while driving. If only the Deputy had been drinking we would have had the trifecta of impaired motorist.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the various self appointed thin blue lines. Before you can enforce the law, you should be following some of those laws. Anyone have any predictions about the inevitable public relations statement from the Sheriff's department? I'm betting on the officer feels terrible about this, and has agreed to be retrained in proper policy concerning distracted driving. That will send a real message to the law enforcement community.
