Pres. Obama Considering Proposal to Grant Honduras Youths Refugee Status

New York Times World ‏@nytimesworld 33m
U.S. Weighs Giving Refugee Status to Youths in Honduras http://nyti.ms/1nENQdS

Hoping to stem the recent surge of migrants at the Southwest border, the Obama administration is considering whether to allow hundreds of minors and young adults from Honduras into the United States without making the dangerous trek through Mexico, according to a draft of the proposal.

If approved, the plan would direct the government to screen thousands of children and youths in Honduras to see if they can enter the United States as refugees or on emergency humanitarian grounds. It would be the first American refugee effort in a nation reachable by land to the United States, the White House said, putting the violence in Honduras on the level of humanitarian emergencies in Haiti and Vietnam, where such programs have been conducted in the past amid war and major crises . . .

Administration officials confirmed that they are considering the idea, although they stressed that no decision has been made to move forward. They said the idea is one of many being discussed by officials at the White House and the Departments of State, Homeland Security, Justice, and Health and Human Services . . .

The proposal, prepared by several federal agencies, says the pilot program under consideration would cost up to $47 million over two years, assuming 5,000 applied and about 1,750 people were accepted. If successful, it would be adopted in Guatemala and El Salvador as well.

These same people complaining would be falling all over themselves to bake them cakes, take them clothes and whatever else they could think of.

So yeah, it's mostly about old fashioned bigotry.

Just speaking for myself, I would not mind if we helped more of those children. However, there will be many in this country, who will see that "solution" as an encouragement for those in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to believe this a sort of lottery. I don't see this approach as one acceptable to most, since we have developed a sort of zenophobia.

. . . would be processing centers based, not only in the U.S. but in Honduras (and the other countries mentioned), as well. That would help stem the tide of refugees making the dangerous trip across the border.

The most important question for me would be, are these youths in danger? If so, this would be a way for the U.S. to respond in a humanitarian way, as we have in several other instances, rather than just regard these children and minors as undocumented aliens and eject them back into their violence-engulfed countries.

America is incredibly stingy when it comes to granting refugee status. We should also be accepting a ton of refugees from Gaza.

. . . it sounds like it's already cleared the proposal stage.

On to seeing if it can be successfully implemented, I suppose.

Thanks for the kick!
