Is the new sport in America "Asshole Contest?"

My wife's old roommate in a midwestern state married a gun lover- they have a lovely home in a country setting. Their little dog was out running around loose, and --- possibly attacked the neighbor's chicken-- who shot it and tossed it's body in a ditch.

Now- it's all out war between the two neighbors with threats of lawsuits, etc.

The little dog was a jack mix- she was about 15 pounds. I was not there- we don't know if it "attacked the chicken" or not. The chicken, btw, is fine-

On DU: a news story about an 80 year old man shooting a pregnant woman who was robbing his house.

Every day, I read stories in the news that just seem to be "who is the biggest asshole?"

The people who let their dogs run around the neighborhood, unleashed- and possibly attacking farm animals? The neighbor who shoots the dog? The pregnant woman who is/ was a criminal, or the elderly man who shot her in the back because-- -he could-- and was probably pissed as hell?

So? Who IS the Biggest Asshole, America? Who is going to win this one?

8. It occurs to me

that the eventual consequences of all of these gun-happy shootings may be that more and more people DO arm themselves who wouldn't have, just to hold their own. The "can't beat 'em/join 'em" strategy.

Not me, but as I'm hearing that more and more people feel empowered to shoot people or their pets for any old perceived offense, I wonder.

Sometimes it's just flat fucking humiliating to be an American.

12. If I had to choose between your two examples:

The man who shot the pregnant woman in the back. He stated that the two, a man and woman were caught burglarizing his home.
He retrieved a .22 cal handgun (I believe) and the two were fleeing. the man left the pregnant woman in the dust.
The gun totin' hero shot the fleeing woman in the back. He said she was slower, so he focused on shooting her...in the back...

He is, my vote, for biggest Asshole COWARD in America.

But, don't cannonize the woman either- She didn't deserve being shot by any stretch of the imagination- especially the way it was done- but, she doesn't deserve to be "a saint" either. She made a choice to put herself in the "line of fire" of an asshole- and for what? I don't even know what was stolen.

I agree with you- asshole coward- no doubt about it.

That said, it's a contest these days. Something else bothers me too- why are the biggest assholes generally the ones that get the most sympathy from the right? (I have put what's his name out of my mind- the jerk that shot Trayvon Martin)
