Judge: Detroit Mob Beating Sentences Will Stand

DETROIT (AP) —A judge is sticking to light sentences for two men who participated in a mob attack on a Detroit-area motorist in April.

Prosecutors lost their bid Friday to get James Davis and Latrez Cummings sent to prison for the attack on Steve Utash.

The suburban tree trimmer was severely beaten when he got out of his pickup truck to help a boy who had darted in front of the vehicle. Utash was in a coma after the beating. Five people pleaded guilty to assault.

The 24-year-old Davis must serve a year in jail, although he can be released during the day for a job. The 19-year-old Cummings is serving six months in jail. They're also on probation.

Judge should be impeached-this kind of ruling encourages violence. Put someone in a coma, and the only consequences will be a respectful request to not do it again.
