The popular lingerie company is one of the largest clients of Delta Galil, which operates a textile factory in the West Bank industrial zone of Barkan as well as a shop in the settlement of Maale Adumim. Palestinians have also criticized the company for establishing its headquarters on land expropriated from Palestinians in the Galilee.

(35,977 posts)Do you think people who refuse to buy any products made in Israeli factories in the West Bank are loonies?

(17,399 posts)Violet_Crumble
(35,977 posts)Heh. It's kind of cute we anger you so. But while I don't boycott Israel, I think it's morally bankrupt to go searching for products made in the West Bank as a 'Yay! Israel! Yay! Occupation!' sort of thing...
tritsofme
(17,399 posts)I only hope to cancel them out. I think it is morally bankrupt to deny Palestinians good jobs at a place like a SodaStream factory.
Violet_Crumble
(35,977 posts)As well as kind of pathetic. If you were concerned at all about Palestinians in the West Bank, you'd be speaking out about the occupation and not making it a point to buy products from Israeli factories in the West Bank to show yr support.
btw, if yr wanting to go out and buy products because they're produced in the settlements, head to Ireland. They're one of the EU countries that have introduced either bans or clear labelling of goods from settlements in the West Bank. In the US everything's labelled Made In Israel, so Ireland's making it easier for you to do yr shopping!

I guess you think it was morally bankrupt for people to boycott South Africa and specifically Sun City? After all, some South Africans in the bantustans had good jobs there.
tritsofme
(17,399 posts)And I reject the false equivalency between Israel and Apartheid South Africa.
Violet_Crumble
(35,977 posts)Do you know why I refuse to buy any goods produced in the settlements in the West Bank? Because in doing so I'd be supporting the illegal settlements, and there's no way I'd do that. That's because I'm opposed to the occupation and Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The latter are a violation of international law and a massive impediment to any future Palestinian state. I don't understand how anyone who's left-wing would call other left-wingers who refuse to buy goods from the settlements a loony. Do you want to explain why you think we're loonies?
What false equivalency? Here's a quick trip down memory lane for you. A large-scale boycott of South Africa happened because the international community had enough of what was happening there. One of the parts of that boycott was of Sun City, a resort built in one of the bantustans and staffed by South Africans who were victims of apartheid. Did people arguing that being employed at Sun City meant boycotting was a bad thing? I'm sure they did, but I suspect they would have been right-wingers for the most part. So how are Palestinians different? Are they not oppressed? Are they not occupied?
And one last question. Do you oppose the occupation of the West Bank? It's just that down in the I/P group, not even the most partisan and one-eyed supporters of Israel think anyone's a loony for refusing to buy stuff made in the settlements.
tritsofme
(17,399 posts)That guarantees security and defensible borders for the Jewish state.
The status of the disputed territories will not be resolved until there is a final peace agreement. Until Israel finds a true partner for peace, instead of rocket fire from the likes of Hamas, that day still seems far away.
And I'm sorry you're offended, but...meh.
Violet_Crumble
(35,977 posts)I'm not one. Maybe you could explain why you think someone who refuses to purchase goods from the settlements is a loony? You don't seem willing to do anything but hurl that insult round...
Israel has no right to the occupied territories. The disputed claim is a right-wing creation, much like the claim that Israel has no partner for peace. Where was Israel during the 80's when the PLO wanted to negotiate? What about all those times that Israel has flat out refused to negotiate with the Palestinians? And do you honestly think that RW extremists like Netanyahu and his gang are interested in negotiating a just peace? Their idea of a 'partner in peace' is a lackey who puts Israelis interests in maintaining the status quo above the well-being and self-determination of the Palestinian people. They have zero intention of removing the settlements and have openly opposed a Palestinian state.
Another thing. Any two state solution isn't just about Israel as you appear to believe. It's got to result in two states that provide safe borders and security for its respective citizens, not one where Israel dominates and controls chunks of the West Bank. And maybe, just maybe you might like to take a pause from absolving Israel of any blame and acknowledge that there's fault on the part of both the Israeli government and Hamas in this....

(14,881 posts)doing all I can to milk the life out of my laptop so I don't have to replace it any time soon. If/when that day comes, I'll do what I can to get a not-Intel microprocessor. The HP printer was a gift. Another one that I'll use till it drops and then replace with something not HP.
I already get my store's brand of hummus, so easily avoid both Tribe and Sabra. Now I need to confirm the store's source, since the containers are suspiciously similar to both Tribe and Sabra.
Easy to avoid the rest, since I have no use for any of them.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)But you do need to keep either some sesame tahini on hand or the seeds. My VitaMix is supposed to be able to make the tahini part of hummus by just using the sesame seeds to the whole mix, but I've never tried that. Normally, I just blend everything in a food processor, and have homemade hummus in five minutes or less

(15,805 posts)With the exception of Soda Stream -- there must be a substitute? -- most of these products aren't on my to-do list. Just setting aside the convenience factor, I can certainly make a much better hummus.
By itself my single effort isn't much, but if I remember correctly, there was a worldwide boycott against another apartheid state that was very effective in influencing their disparate policies. Toward that goal, I'd support corporate divestment as well.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)one. WAS thinking of buying an HP, but I can easily find another brand. Same thing with our car. It won't be a Volvo that's for sure.
Humus also can be substituted. The rest, I don't buy anyhow.

It's a terrible corporation anyhow and should be boycotted even without this latest reason. So that will be easy.

The Palestinian counter to the boycott of Soda Stream (linked at the article) was very illuminating. Apparently it's one of the few companies that hire Palestinian Arabs and it treats them very well.
Violet_Crumble
(35,977 posts)I doubt there's anyone here who would have tried to argue that because those South African companies treated their staff well (Sun City's a good example), that South Africa shouldn't have been boycotted. Me, I'm opposed to academic boycotts of Israel, but refuse to buy any product that's made in Israeli factories in the West Bank. Not that much Israeli or settlement produce finds its way here, so it's really just a moral thing for me...

I wish the Middle East conflict would end so we could get back to more important things, like arguing about which country or region makes the best hummus.
