AMC is one of the Air Force's major commands. One of AMC's jobs that they spend a lot of time training for is transporting supplies and people all around the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Mobility_Command

we can't airlift these people to a place of safety if we can fly supplies to them?

19. Probably an impossible undertaking with tens of thousands trapped on that mountain.

Especially when its a mountain with thousands of bad guys with guns and rockets in the area. I also doubt there is a safe air strip anywhere close, so slow moving choppers that are easy targets would be the only way.
