(813 posts)My son went on a few service trips to Honduras and the Dominican Republic. He loved it and I pegged him for the Peace Corps type. So when he came to me about joining the military, I was shocked to say the least. I told him that I didn't care if he was 18 or not, he was not going in enlisted.
He applied to the US Naval Academy and didn't make the cut the first time, so he spent a year at OSU (go Bucks!). He reapplied and was accepted. Four years studying mostly STEM, plus all the military tradition that goes with it. Their theme is "not college". When he's done with coursework, he owes the Navy five years. I worry about the state of the world and him everyday.
I guess he knew what he was doing, as he's thriving, (ranked 25 out of 1164 in his class) Different strokes for different folks. (he's also getting a $400,000 education there). BTW, I'm a pacifist, so this situation has left me confused, but it's his life and happiness.
