Palin and purgatory

If, by chance, you haven't yet ponied up the hundred bucks for your yearly subscription to Sarah Palin's new web channel, here's an example of what you're missing:
We believe? Wait, I thought fast food joints, hurh. Dont you guys think that theyre like of the Devil or somethin I was... Liberals, you want to send those evil employees who would dare work at a fast food joint then ya just dont believe in, thought you wanted to, I dunno, send them to Purgatory or somethin so they all go VEGAN and, uh, wages and picket lines I dunno theyre not often discussed in Purgatory, are they? I dunno why are you even worried about fast food wages because ...

This snippet reminded me of that word salad of a resignation speech that Palin made, in which she showed that she was not a quitter by, well, quitting.

(8,965 posts)Palin does not even make an effort to respond to the premise of Warren's argument, that those who work in the fast food industry are entitled to receive a decent living wage. It immediately degenerates into an illogical "vegan vs. carnivore" spiel. Palin is essentially unable to focus on or respond to the core issue raised by Warren, instead relying on ridicule and thinly veiled false equivalency. In failing to do so, she quickly loses the argument, letting Warren's comments go unchallenged. More absurdity to follow, enhanced by the realization that some are apparently willing to pay for this drivel.

(3,871 posts)The context of the above quotation follows:
Published September 01, 2008
...
WALLACE: The choice of a running mate is the first presidential- level decision that you've made. Why shouldn't we think that this is really about politics, about reaching out to women, especially to Hillary Clinton supporters?
MCCAIN: Well, I think that I had to do what I think is best for the future of the country. That's the point here. And I think, by any parameter of judgment, given the economic difficulties that we're facing today, especially on jobs and health care and insurance, these are issues health insurance and education, these are the issues that, really, Americans are most concerned about.
Americans are concerned about our nation's security. And I think she (Sarah Palin) has exercised and shown the judgment to address those issues. But she also understands the fact that people in America are sitting down at the kitchen table this morning, as we speak, and saying, how are we going to stay in our homes? How are we going to keep our health insurance? How are we going to educate our kids? And some of them have just lost their jobs.
So I think Governor Palin is uniquely as a governor, she has had executive experience. She didn't sit in the state legislature. She didn't vote just with her party and go along to get along. Senator Obama has never taken on the leaders of his party on any issue. You tell me a time when he had. She has been an independent spirit that has taken them on at every opportunity.

We believe?
(I clearly wish to inveigh against what you are saying, so I will use my faux-serious inflection and sarcasm, which indicates to my worshipers - who all hover around the coherence and intelligence of 12 year old girls - that I am being really passive-aggressive and getting ready to unload a verbal haymaker....)
Wait, I thought fast food joints,
(Now I am clearly trying to draw the 2-second attention span of my target audience to "Chick-Fil-A" and the righteous battle for religious freedom and free speech that our conservative media was pimping so voraciously a year or so ago...)
hurh.
(This is just my way of having a "Reagan-esque" catch line like "well, I , uh..." if intoned like St. Ronnie of Reagan. Its a miserable failure and a totally grating thing to anyone who sees through my act, but the sheeple LOVE it!!! Makes me "folksy" ya know!)
Dont you guys think that theyre like of the Devil or somethin I was...
(Now, for the sheeple in the audience who did NOT pick up on the earlier subliminal reference to "Chick-Fil-A", I am gonna throw out some explicit religious imagery for ya....you know, to make sure you're thinking that all Liberals are anti-religion because we tie them to everything negative about religion at every chance we get...just like Hobby Lobby, which as we all know was not about women's rights...it was about puttin' Jesus in a box, and I know that the good people giving me $9.95/month want me to re-assure them that they are right and I am with them and its those meanies in the other party that are to blame for all their woes, not my corporate sponsors, oh, no....they are good, Jesus-loving people too...)
Liberals,
(Gotta make sure to spit this out with appropriate venom and proximity to any and all references I make to anything....but especially MEDIA...that is a trademark phrase right up near "hurph" for me....)
you want to send those evil employees who would dare work at a fast food joint then
(The word smithing here is quite intentional, its dog whistle 101 time...when I want to make my followers believe something, I simply reaffirm it in my speeches, in what seems an in-artful manner to the non-initiated, but is really just another form of mind control deviously - or quite accidentally - used by me. It's no accident that I used "evil employees" instead of "poor", "abused" or "exploited"....you see, those terms do NOT fit my narrative - those damn employees ARE evil for wanting to take the profits of the hard working store OWNERS....can't have any other description but "evil" associated with that dontchaknow!)
ya just dont believe in,
(It's been a few seconds since I rubbed your overly sensitive faith buttons...so I'm gonna throw in another "belief" reference or derivative to make sure that you are feeling all warm and fuzzy about me being one of you even as a exploit and harm your best interests....but just remember we believe...)
thought you wanted to, I dunno, send them to Purgatory or somethin
(MORE religious imagery....who cares if I am mixing in Papist nonsense from those Roman Catholics by taking about something they came up...the important thing is RELIGION...ME....SAY WORDS THAT LINK TO IT...YOU GET REQUISITE SEZ AW FEELING.)
so they all go VEGAN
(I know that at this point in the performance its all about treating this structured crap like those old "Mad Libs" things where you add random words to sentences without caring what they are...so here we need a "liberal word that conservative mock"...I chose "Vegan" when I could have just as easily used "environmentalist", "global warming hoaxer" or my favorite "evolutionist"...in this context, "Vegan" worked better because it also reinforces my subliminal conservative boogeyman talking point about Michelle Obama and eatin' healthy and stuff....THAT - you know, caring about stuff that really COULD make your miserable little lives better instead of making me richer...)
and, uh, wages and picket lines I dunno theyre not often discussed in Purgatory, are they?
(once again, this doesn't have to make any REAL sense or points....its just serving to stoke the righteous anger of the flock...more religious imagery 'cause you gotta ALWAYS hammer that point home; and we'll use the other liberal boogeymen words without context or association as if wages and picket lines were somehow synonymous.)
I dunno why are you even worried about fast food wages because ...
(By the time we get this far, no one - supporters or haters - are even listening any more....the supporters have gone into default "nod head in agreement" mode and the haters are either throwing things at their TV, howling in laughter or just plain pissed that I am getting paid like P-Diddy in 1997...but no one seems to notice that I am intentionally omitting key parts of this when I say fast food wages and leave out the "workers" part....see I cannot EVER mention the enemies of my pay masters in any manner that would anger said pay masters or would allow a shred of doubt to creep into the followers minds.)
Does Palin sound like an idiot?
Of course she does...on purpose. It does not hurt at all that, in this area, no acting is required for her...
She is a well-oiled conservative talking points machine...she is a d-list actress delivering lines...its why the Reagan comparisons remain apt with this twit from the wastelands. Nothing sticks to her because she is greased up to the fair-thee-well with conservative talking point juice...it literally oozes out of her like crude oil bubbling up from the ground before the age of oil extraction began in earnest.
Palin is an idiot.

(2,741 posts)Sarah "I Quit" Palin has an audience consisting of Republican men who want to see her naked and imagine they are in bed with her and Republican women who want to be like her so their husbands will want to see them naked and be in bed with them. I imagine that is a very small audience.
I have a few degrees in English, and I defy anyone to make sense of the disconnected word-thoughts spilling through her mouth from what passes for her brain.

It hurt my brain to parse the non-grammar of Palin's gibberish.
I sought meaning and found only headache.

(10,252 posts)She doesn't need us to demonize her to make her look idiotic. In fact, stop demonizing all the RWer crazy talkers, because when you demonize them, you are joining their team. That's what they do to us because ad hominem attacks, character assassinations, etc is all they have to offer up as an "argument."
Just let the Sarah Palins and Louie Gohmert's of the world stand as they are and say their stupidities for all to hear. When Sister Sarah purposely dumbs down her speech, that's her attempt at being "folksy." Because plain good ol' boy red neck folks is who she thinks her base is. It's a language of dog whistle innuendo about non-whites, non-evangelicals, intellectual pointy-heads, and the poor.
Just see her for what she is. A self-centered, resentful, angry woman whose mind is clouded with ignorant perceptions.

I have never had to work for minimum wage but I know people who must to even attempt to survive.

(14,255 posts)To me - and I love reading James Joyce's Ulysses, makes perfect sense - she just has thought of so many ways to jeer at what Warren said that she loses coherency completely. She has no answer, she is just jeering at the premise that folks who think fast food is not good for you would care about the people who work there. Trying to hard to be cogent and funny and hit all the marks at the same time - religion, VEGANS, minimum wage, etc.
All of her stupid ripostes piled up in a waiting room in her brain that is way too small to hold them, and they kind of leaked out and flew out of her mouth like rabid little bats.
Surely she must have been a better speaker than that, at some point. She is either deteriorating, slightly high, or has developed some thought problems brought on by stress or the inability to spin her notoriety into something like the presidency.
The answer to her real point, there at the blessed end, is that in today's America, a minimum wage job is all that there is ever going to be for some folks, and not everyone has another wage-earner in their family who can pick up the dreadful gap between minimum wage and what it costs to live in America. There is no better-paying job step up to, for a lot of people.
And the GOP is obstructing jobs bills, and the Tea Party is goading them on.

(1,301 posts)As a disappointed Metallica fan (for all the usual and predictable reasons), I rented that expecting some cheap laffs at the expense of a couple of aging narcissists who hadn't made a particularly good record since 1988.
Instead, what I saw was a couple of grown men who in 20 years had never dealt with the death of one of their best friends, and with such obvious hurt child issues that it was hard not to feel sorry for them. (Well, ok, I still hate Lars, but I really came away from it feeling for James Hetfield.) Moreover, these guys were so out of touch that they were willing to commit to film the sort of behavior that be embarrassing as hell for most adults.
I rented the video for laffs, but it ended up making me kind of sad.
That's how this Sarah Palin video is. I watched it for a laugh, but it's just embarrassing to the point where I almost feel compassion for her. I would never make such a public ass out of myself, and I doubt many others here would. There's a serious emotional and psychological wreck on display here, and for me at least, it's not funny or infuriating, it's just sad.

(11,991 posts)Sure, it was delivered in a folksy manner, and it was a stupid point, but it was comprehensible, despite the transcript.
It's not the word salad that gets me, it's the "logic."
I don't know why she thinks that "liberals who don't approve of fast food" wouldn't care about fast food workers. And of course, plenty of liberals eat fast food. But we don't believe in purgatory, because we're all atheists.

(62,276 posts)See, being a big free marketer, she doesn't believe in the minimum wage, therefore minimum wage workers aren't getting their full potential by being minimum wage workers. So while evil liberals like Warren are calling for raising the minimum wage and for people to work jobs 9-5 flipping hamburgers, Palin believes they can go on to run the next Apple or Microsoft! Ya see? She's for the workers, Warren is for the slaves!
That's the line of argument and you can see her segueing into that argument at the end of the video.
BTW, it was a verbatim transcript. Those are never ever coherent. It's why most of the time people request a general transcript, which drops voiced words or transition words and sentences.
