The video is heart wrenching. A family, a community in pain.
Desiree Harris says she was driving through her suburban St. Louis neighborhood Saturday afternoon when she saw her 18-year-old grandson, Michael Brown, walking a few blocks from her house. After she arrived home minutes later, she heard a commotion and ran outside to see Brown's body on the pavement nearby.
Hundreds of angry residents gathered for hours after the incident, shouting and cursing at police.
Shot for walking while black.
The response is interesting. A furious community, and the police show up with dogs and then with machine guns to get the crowd under control.

I don't really like thinking this, but there it is.

What tipping point will we need to reach to end this murderous rampage by those supposed to "protect and serve", by our "police"?
They protect and serve the 1%, few others.

(34,648 posts)And then there will be a war they do not have the numbers to win and not enough ties to the community to prevent. Keep killing peoples children and one day somebody will kill yours. Revenge is a part of the human condition. This is how riots start. Cops cannot continue to be above the law they are supposed to enforce.
Cops need to start arresting cops. Immediately upon commission of a crime. No desk duty. Go to lockup, go to a bail hearing, and bail out if they can.

(3,891 posts)It's from one of the news stations in town. The reaction of the public isn't hyped. It's outrage. The statement of the young man walking with Michael Brown is unequivocal. The statements of the witnesses all agree Michael Brown turned around with his hands up and was moving to get down, as presumably ordered to by the officer. You can't tell someone to move and then shoot them for doing what you said to.
But write it off as hype. Because that community is pretty upset in the video from the local news video. The dogs and machine guns were in the video, not hype. Watch the video on the daily mail page, and then you tell me if that is hyped.

(12,158 posts)Even though Murdock doesn't own the Mail he probably would be proud if he did. I would prefer a source closer to the US maybe even from St. Louis.

(29,676 posts)I live on the other side of the state and those I know from STL were talking about it. From what I heard, no hype was needed. The scene was a madhouse and there was talk of demonstrations and protests from groups statewide. If I hear of any plans actually coming about I'll post.

(2,337 posts)I can think of several instances in which it is acceptable to shoot an "unarmed" person. An unarmed person attempting to beat someone with fists? And unarmed person attempting to take a gun off of someone?
Hell, there are times when it is more than acceptable to shoot someone in the back. Not saying this was one, but still...
Just saying. The world isn't black/white.

You think you're on par with the Palestinians? let's ignore for the moment that it's Democrats who are a major part of the problems Palestinians are having right now, and look at the realities of Gaza... what city do you live in, moveonne? is it flattened? no? Then your situation isn't comparable. Have nearly two thousand Democrats been slaughtered for the crime of existing? No? Then it's fucking shameful you think you're persecuted on that level.
Think before you speak, goddammit.

(18,186 posts)yet he purposefully minimizes the number of shell casings to protect the officer, and further prejudices the case by repeating the officer's testimony. I smell COVERUP and LIES.
The testimony of the murderer, as in all cases of murderous, thug cops, will be treated as solid gold fact, irrefutable and trustworthy, even though the cop MURDERED in cold blood. There was no reason to shoot an unarmed person so many times. Yet a person with this level of poor impulse control will be the star witness and the case will hinge on that cop's word.
Yet the eyewitness testimony of dozens will be ignored, marginalized and dismissed.
They say St. Louis County has cellphone videos. I hope those people uploaded those videos because I don't trust St. Louis County thugs at ALL.
I also hope someone with video will come forward and let us see what's on film.
Even if this kid did struggle with the cop, the law does not list the death penalty as the punishment.

(18,186 posts)or else they are purposely provoking the populace so they have a reason to use all those semi-autos they got from the military.
I just can't understand why this is happening all over this country, by the worst of the no-neck cretins in uniform.
And when St. Louis county clears this murderous, cruel, bloodthirsty cop of all wrongdoing, I shudder to imagine the fallout.
Something must be done.
Obama spoke out against Trayvon Martin's murder.
Where is he to speak up for all the families cops are brutalizing?
Where is the president?
This is no longer just a local issue, this is a nation-wide scourge.
When a young black male defeats the odds, graduates high school and is headed to college, and then is GUNNED DOWN in cold blood, there is no hope for young black males in this country.
It's heartbreaking as a nation to see these cops keep getting away with murder.
What will it take to stop it? Do some cops want war? Because if they continue murdering people on the street, beating them up, shooting their pets, throwing flash grenades on babies, those who have nothing to lose will give it to them, and I predict a lot of cops won't make it in that war.
That's no threat; that's just human nature at work, and police chiefs had better weed their forces of the unstable, trigger-happy cops or they are going to put all cops at risk.
My heart goes out to the family of Michael Brown. I know the pride and joy and hope they had in that young man. I know how they expected the best from him, and how relieved they were that he beat the odds and was headed for success.
And now, I am crying with them because all of their hope and dreams for that young man, all of his hard work and diligence are now moot. Because of a thug with a badge and some ammo and a cold-hearted hatred for the people of his community.
RIP Michael Brown

(47,953 posts)After all, they have the guns, the military gear, and the justice system that allows them to get away with murder. I'll bet some were hoping the crowd would get violent, so they would be able to beat people up or worse. "Put the fear of god in them", so to speak. Look at that picture of the cop I posted above, he has his dog ready to go doesn't he?
Tsiyu
(18,186 posts)and I agree, they seem to think they are a law unto themselves. And they almost appear to be eagerly anticipating confrontation.
When we let these police departments have access to all sorts of military gear, they get the idea they have to use those weapons at some point. It's really frightening.
Such a waste of a young life in this case. If he was running away, there was simply no reason in hell to execute him.

(29,676 posts)He was young and he had a plan. This isn't right and leaving his body in the street like they did was meant to be an example. There's no reason why they couldn't have had units called out, pictures taken and any "evidence" needed for an investigation and then quickly handled his remains, taking them to the local morgue.
To leave him in the street like they did so everyone could walk by and see it was wrong on so many levels. It feels like a form of intimidation.
