From a Larry King interview:
KING: Wait a minute. Are you a liberal?
BACALL: I'm a liberal. The L word!
KING: Egads!
BACALL: I love it. Being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal. You do not have a small mind. Little picayune things. You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, little picayune thing.
KING: You're open to...
BACALL: You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, I'm a Roosevelt. I'm a -- and I hear anyone say anything about FDR...
KING: You're a new dealer, fair dealer.
BACALL: I'm a total -- and I was a kid and I'm total, total, total liberal and proud of it. And I think it's outrageous to say the l word. I mean, excuse me. They should be damn lucky that they were liberals here. Liberals gave more to the population of the United States than any other group.

(10,362 posts)Compare that to the shite you hear from so-called leaders today. That's unapologetic truth right there.

And about Sinatra - she dared to say he should "just shut up and sing." Quite a dame.

(32,723 posts)Or that it "takes courage to admit".
The people who defended the lies about Iraq and supported the following corruption. The ones who have ZERO memory of gas prices going up under Bush and claim it only went up under Obama. The ones who stood in line to vote in 08 acting like Palin was hot and ready for them pulling a train behind that curtain. Then they spent four years throwing a temper tantrum, then in '12 they held their nose and voted for the slimiest guy to run since Horace Greeley. The ones who REFUSE to admit "Obamacare" covers white people too. The ones who keep repeating the lie that Obama looted the Treasury to increase welfare. The ones who refuse to admit Global Warming, or EVOLUTION is real.
Those guys stand with their chests swelled up with pride and boast about being Conservative like they're fucking Superman.

(14,093 posts)They've decided to let the right have the word "liberal" as a slur, and hope that if they just use a different word, then they can overcome it.
Of course, all that happiness is Rush and Beck start using "progressive" as a slur as well.
Why let conservatives have a language victory? Liberalism is a proud tradition, encompassing greats from FDR to Truman to JFK. And, if you want to go back to the 1800s when the parties were flipped in ideology, you can even claim liberal Republicans like Abraham Lincoln and Thaddeus Stevens.

The dialog is a bit schlock. But Bogie and Bacall are in love, so it works. And Bacall delivers one of the best tag lines in cinema.
It's even better when you help.
Then, there's the whistle thing at the end.

(297,253 posts)Course I remember them well, longship.. I can still see Humphrey Bogart's pic in the paper saying he had died and feeling sad..
Lauren was quite the 19 year old actress in To Have and Have Not launching her career in 1944~ A New York Girl..
snip//
Bacall launched her career with "To Have and Have Not," the 1944 film that turned "Bogie and Bacall" into one of Hollywood's legendary couples on screen and off.
She was born Betty Joan Perske on Sept. 16, 1924, in New York.
Bacall was a fledgling New York stage actress and a model whose pictures in Harper's Bazaar came to the attention of director Howard Hawks, who placed her under contract
Her first mention in the Los Angeles Times came in 1944 in a column by Hedda Hopper who noted Hawks was "doing a rave about his wife's discovery Lauren Bacall" for his wartime drama "To Have and Have Not."

(40,416 posts)I cannot think of a part she played that I did not like.
What was the H movie with Paul Newman where she was the evil one? Harper? Lauren Bacall's presence was prominent.
She did have that noir sense in her acting. But she played opposite Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe in a romantic comedy, How to Marry a Millionaire. Lauren Bacall is one of my faves.
And regards to you, my good friend.

(40,416 posts)The iconic scene with Bogie. Betty pwns him. And they are in love.
And love, my friend, solves all problems. The scene gives me shivers no matter how many times I view it -- about a dozen times tonight.
Bogie and Bacall remained devoted until his death, and she loved him beyond that.
One can see that in that scene. It was respect. Her line, "It's even better when you help" is an incredible statement.
My fondest regards,
