According to those who study such things, while Stone Age implements were equally divided between left and right handed folks, studies of cave drawings seem to indicate a preference for the left hand.
Now, that may not seem like a big deal, and in reality it probably isnt, but as we prepare to celebrate National Left Handers Day today, its at least a nod to southpaws everywhere.
No one has come up with a definitive reason for why some people are left-handed, but about 13 percent of the population around the world are, and it is thought to be genetic it definitely runs in families.
Theres no doubt that the world as we know it is made for right handed people. Many of the items righties take for granted are difficult, if not impossible for lefties to use properly.
Almost all doors are designed to open with the right hand, and hand rails are always on the right. Watch your step, lefties, no help on that side.

For my fellow left handers who grew up with permanent pencil lead smudges on our hands in school and have fought a life long battle with potato peelers and can openers, this day is ours!!

(7,784 posts)kid I did my best to adapt to the right handed world.
I managed with most things but scissors were always a problem and, as you said, painful. Made it really hard to do arts and crafts in school and other kid stuff. I finally got left handed scissors when I was a teenager and have had a pair ever since.

For the first time in my life - I have a 'left hand triange' kitchen and EVERYTHING with one handle opens to the left.

(21,946 posts)my grand children are left handed..I think one more is but I'm not sure.
What's amazing since we are among a small minority of the population, is that the year Ross Perot ran for president, all the main candidates were left handed, and Obama also is a lefty.
edited to add this:
I bought a left-handed can opener one time, and my rightie husband picked it up to open a can..never saw it before because that wasn't one of the things he ever did. He yelled to me from the kitchen. "How do you work this thing?"

(560 posts)left handed..... we have two sons....our oldest son is left handed and our youngest is right handed....the younger one does everything right handed except to eat. He uses his left hand to hold a fork. My theory is simple....he grew up watching three people use their left hand to eat...the fork is placed on the left side of the plate.....he must have thought that was the hand to use. On another topic...I played right handed golf for 30 years and really struggled. Ten years ago I made a change to left handed golf...what an improvement.....I swung a bat left handed....and bowled left handed......far more comfortable and natural. Go lefties!
