Michael Eric Dyson Spells It Out for White People: Police Won’t ‘Kill Your Child’

http://www.alternet.org/civil-liberties/michael-eric-dyson-spells-it-out-white-people-police-wont-kill-your-child

Georgetown University Professor Michael Eric Dyson on Sunday called on President Barack Obama to use his position to explain to white Americans that they do not continually have to fear that police would “kill your child” as African-American parents do.

In an appearance on CBS, Dyson said that protests in Ferguson, Missouri after a white police officer shot 18-year-old Michael Brown while he was unarmed was a symptom of a larger problem in the nation.

“Ferguson is emblematic of those larger shifts,” he pointed out. “You’ve got white flight of a formerly white suburb that’s now 65 percent black. You’ve got 22 percent poverty, you’ve got the over-policing of an entire community who feel racially harassed by the police. Every 28 hours across America a black person is killed by a security guard, a police officer or some other executive of the state or police force.”

Dyson said that President Obama “knows better than most what happens in poor communities that have been antagonized historically by the hostile relationship between black people and the police department.”

WTF is wrong with the police. The police are out of control. While blacks may be more affected, everyone is affected by this militarization of the police departments. This is partly because of the war on drugs and partially because of the end of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And the idea that everyone is a suspect.

And white people whose children are mentally ill ( and white) are afraid that their children will be killed by the police. There are many mentally ill people (both white and black) who are unarmed and killed by the police.

yes -- white people wind up victims of police actions - absolutely.

but black people wind up dead at the hands of the police BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK.

and that has been happening for a very long time.

but the police always have a reason. Being black shouldn't be one of them, neither should being mentally ill. And I'm pretty sure that's been happening for a very long time too.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

literally saying it's racist to contradict them

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Aug 18, 2014, 01:04 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: not hide-worthy -- can be dealt with in the thread.

Plenty of murder-by-cop going around these days to satisfy everyone!
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Alerter badly exaggerates what the post says. To go from "possibly racist" to "it's racist to contradict them" is unjustified.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Literally?! Alerter might want to review the meaning of that term.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Thankfully, xchrom, this jury made a unanimous call. (I certainly prefer being on a jury that gets it right!)

You could not be more wrong. Almost all child abuse is by someone the child already knows, usually family.

And "this guy" was obviously talking about cops who kill minorities. He could not be more right. Except for some poor rural whites, most whites don't have that fear.

The unarmed victim of Riverside, Calif. I believe he was the son of a an former policeman and they beat him to death. I would agree with him that police overwhelmingly pick on black people but they also beat abuse and kill those with special needs, along with members of the LGBT and the gay community.

I'm sure he means well but if this is made about race instead of an out of control enemy force that can kill anyone with impunity, the Police will continue to kill whites while blacks do nothing, they will continue to kill blacks while whites do nothing, they will continue to kill Hispanics while blacks and whites do nothing and in the end A LOT of people are going to end up dead while we sit on our hands and talk race.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

you could fill many, many pages of you tube stuff that's about black interactions with police alone.

many -- going back many years.

and again -- it's because of a person's skin color that these interactions happen.

i consider reactions like yours to be vaguely racist. -- well intentioned but racist.
