NY Magazine: The Ice Bucket Challenge is a Medical Disaster

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/08/ice-bucket-challenge-is-a-medical-disaster.html

-snip-
The ALS Association has raised millions and millions of dollars for scientific research by persuading Americans to record videos of themselves being doused in ice-cold water. The trend has gotten so far out of hand that Ethel Kennedy challenged President Obama to douse himself. Has nobody considered the dangers associated with exposing a president to hypothermic shock? Have we already forgotten what happened to William Henry Harrison?

this stupid ice bucket challenge will last until people start having heart attacks.

why can't people just give to a charity without having to do something stupid?

millions have rolled in for research. I applaud them. But then, I live in Alaaka and deal with cold water all the time.

For Pete's sake, chill out.

My boys (10 and 12) were thrilled to do the challenge.

First, they looked at the youtube video of how the challenge got started. They know more about ALS than they did before.

Second, they thought about the three friends to challenge (one ended up picking his football coach).

Third, they planned how they were going to complete the challenge, together, separately, each pours on the other, they pour on themselves. Should Dad pour from a step, the ground or the roof.

Fourth they completed the challenge and enjoyed themselves.

Oh, yeah and fifth, we donated to ALS.

Why judge? Why take joy away from this? If you don't like it, ignore it quietly.

how much a risk could there be for those who are healthy? As to the temperature of the water, there could be a trick to this - you CAN have ice cubes in warm water -- it takes a while for them to melt as any one who has made ice tea by adding ice cubes to strong brewed tea knows.

I bet the water here in Lake Champlain in Burlington, where people do swim, is not much warmer than the bucket of water to which ice was added. (Lake Michigan stays pretty cold too.)

injured during the ice bucket challenge. The story is conveniently short of any kind of facts or anything, it just appears they wanted to write an article about the IBC but didn't have anything to say about it so they made something up. Weird.

bucket challenge debate though.

Around 36,000 people die each year from the flu....so far none have even been injured due to the ice bucket challenge, so that was an awful strange comparison to make.

that said, I'm still wondering about it. This article doesn't have any facts in it.
