http://www.politicususa.com/2014/08/19/study-reveals-republican-policies-pushed-millions-americans-hunger.htmlIt has been over five years since Republicans crashed the economy and put millions upon millions of Americans out of work and into poverty, and throughout the recovery Republicans drastically cut domestic programs, purposely kept wages stagnant, and maintained tax cuts and special privileges for the people they serve; the rich and corporations. According to their economic ideology, then, with the stock market at record highs, corporate profits through the roof, and unemployment continuing to fall, there should be very few Americans suffering from food insecurity and outright hunger. However, according to a shocking study released by the relief charity Feeding America on Monday, the number of Americans struggling to feed their families is the same as during the height of the Great Recession.
Feeding Americas study, Hunger in America 2014, was a four year endeavor and the most comprehensive study of hunger in the U.S. ever conducted. The study focused on families served by Feeding America and did not include poor people who use food programs apart from its network. The study covered 60,000 people with a median income of $9,175 annually, which is less than half the federal poverty level for a family of three according to Census Bureau data for 2013. The charity serves over 15.5 million households of which about half receive minimal amounts of food stamps that last on average less than two weeks. Republicans just cut food stamps by about $800 million a year that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said reduced benefits for 850,000 poor households nationwide. Republicans complained the food stamp cuts were not harsh enough because their predilection is keeping the poor hungry to make room for tax cuts for the rich, purportedly to lift more Americans out of poverty.
When the Great Recession struck, the percentage of Americans suffering food insecurity (hunger) spiked to 14.6% from 11% as the recession started shedding jobs, and although the economy is recovering, the number has stayed the same regardless more Americans are back to work. In fact, in a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute, wages fell during the recession and the recovery for workers struggling in the bottom 70% of the wage distribution, despite increases in productivity.

(53,339 posts) More than 46 million people, including 12 million children rely on food pantries and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families.
Among all clients, 43 percent are white (1 in 10 white people in America), 26 percent are black (1 in 4 black people in America), and 20 percent are Latino (1 in 6 Latinos in America). (Source: US Census Bureau)
10 percent of adult clients are students.

(15,882 posts)In writing, from the former Treasury of the Secretary, is the reason that banks are being helped and tens of millions of people will live their lives in poverty.
And it is the plan of this current administration. Feel free to read the story written by President Obama's hand-picked Treasury Secretary as he lays out the plan whereby they saved the nation by letting 10 million families lose their homes and millions lose their jobs, and today are leaving 9 million families with underwater loans, and millions more who WILL lose their home when interest rates rise, all to make sure the thieving bankers are saved.
He even went on Jon Stewart's show where voters in the audience laughed in his face as he explained this policy to them.
The author's work is helpful for the historical perspective, but you can't blame it on other people if the people who are creating current policy are going to write books and say they these are the their ideas and the greatest thing since sliced bread, and continue the problems caused by other people.

Want to remind folks that when they vote for any republican they are not voting for a person but a part of a machine that takes food from the mouths of babes, puts folks out of work and closes schools.

(62,416 posts)We have about a mointh of sweet corn that is coming to an end. Most of that goes to the corporations for canning.

(62,416 posts)Man has known forever that you can easily make ethanol from corn and all sorts of plants. Then as the price of gas soared under Bush or Clinton, someone put pencil to paper and figured you could burn alcohol for about the same cost as gas (not really but close enough + it wasn't buried under someone else's sand.)
Thus corn becomes an alternative fuel. Thus the annual glut we had here becomes a shortage and the price of corn skyrockets to the moon. It is now a short commodity. Farmers got rich, literally.
I had started heating my house with corn about 2 years before all this happened. Corn was $2/bushel at that time. In about 3 years it was $7.50/ bushel. Who wouldn't sell it for fuel at those prices? And the jobs it creates fermenting and transporting the stuff makes politicians absolutely giddy.
No matter how immoral it seems, it is hard to turn down that kind of money. We are basically a monoculture state (corn, rotate some soybeans in every few years). If you may have noticed, soybeans are used for biodiesal. Their price more than doubles also.
Just last night I made an appeal for help for our local backpack program that helps kids who don't have enough to eat amid the most fertile soil in the world.
