President Barack Obama opted not to do the viral Ice Bucket Challenge but his predecessor was game for it.
To you all who challenged me, I do not think its presidential for me to be splashed with ice water, former president George W. Bush says in a video for NBCs Today. So, Im simply going to write you a check.
Enter Laura Bush to dump a bucket of ice water on Bushs head. That check is from me, the former first lady says. I dont want to ruin my hairstyle. At the end of the video, Bush challenges former president Bill Clinton.
For the uninitiated, heres how the challenge, which benefits charities fighting Lou Gehrigs disease, works: If the person challenged agrees to have a bucket of iced water poured on his or her head, the challenger then has to pay money to the charity. If the challenged person doesnt agree, he or she then has to pay. And on and on it goes.

(11,519 posts)I'd love to share this with some of my right with friends, a news story about how these morons defunded ALS research would go a long way.
EDIT... Never mind. It was the Budget Control Act of 2011 that cut the budget for NIH. Quite a few politicians (including Democrats) held their nose and voted for the act in order to end the debt-ceiling standoff. I think it would be more telling to find out which politicians insisted that cuts to NIH be included in that act.

(4,750 posts)I say this as someone who lost a beloved and beautiful brother to ALS, a cruel, cruel disease.
I'm glad the challenge raises much-needed money for research, don't get me wrong.
Still, it seems like a silly stunt to me that's more about the person taking the challenge than anything else. It doesn't surprise me that Bush is willing to let his inner frat boy out, aided by his Stepford wife. Just like everyone else who does this, they're yukking it up and making sure the world sees it.
And what's Paul Ryan up to? Does he think he's looking cool (remember the working out photo)? Is he taking the challenge to avoid donating, because ALS research sometimes involves stem cell research? The anti-abortion camp has already come out against this challenge because stem cells = babies in their tiny minds.
I'm willing to bet that these two clowns and many others taking the challenge see it as another wacky way to join the in crowd and advertise themselves on television or Facebook.
I'd like to see Bush spend one day -- hell, one half a day -- trying to live with almost no control over his body, the everyday reality for many ALS patients. No walking, no talking, no feeding himself, no showers or going to the bathroom alone, etc. And then write a check, not avoid writing one. And then tell no-one.
For me this is just a viral stunt for narcissists. Sorry for the rant, but it's personal to me.
