Large Peanut and Almond Butter Recall

This is going to be bad news for a lot of us out there (and may explain why you haven’t been feeling so well): If you have peanut and/or almond butters in your fridge or pantry, you may want to throw it out. There are a bunch of brands of the nut butters that are being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. nSpired Natural Foods, Inc., which produces peanut and almond butter for Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Krogers, Safeway, as well as for the brands Arrowhead Mills and MaraNatha, said Tuesday that routine FDA testing brought the possible risk to their attention, and that there have been reports of four illnesses that may have been caused by their products.

Salmonella is a nasty organism that in most healthy people will just cause really uncomfortable gastrointestinal issues – stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Those affected will often have symptoms within one to three days of exposure for up to a week. In young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, the infection can be a lot more serious.
The possibly affected nut butters were sold in the United States, along with Canada, the Dominican Republic, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates.

A list of all the products that are currently recalled can be found on the FDA site. Trader Joe’s explains on its website that “Customers who have purchased any of these items with the specified code dates are urged to not eat them and to dispose of them or return them to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.” Whole Foods, though says “Consumers do not need to return the product to the store where it was purchased. Instead, consumers are urged to dispose of the recalled product and its container. Please contact the Company at 1-800-937-7008 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM CST for a replacement or refund, and with general inquiries.”
