NYT: For about four hours, in the unrelenting summer sun, his body remained where he fell.

FERGUSON, Mo. — Just after noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer on Canfield Drive.

For about four hours, in the unrelenting summer sun, his body remained where he fell.

Neighbors were horrified by the gruesome scene: Mr. Brown, 18, face down in the middle of the street, blood streaming from his head. They ushered their children into rooms that faced away from Canfield Drive. They called friends and local news stations to tell them what had happened. They posted on Twitter and Facebook and recorded shaky cellphone videos that would soon make their way to the national news.

........
Mr. Brown probably could not have been revived, and the time that his body lay in the street may ultimately have no bearing on the investigations into whether the shooting was justified. But local officials say that the image of Mr. Brown’s corpse in the open set the scene for what would become a combustible worldwide story of police tactics and race in America, and left some of the officials asking why.

.......

The St. Louis County Police Department, which almost immediately took over the investigation, had officers on the scene quickly, but its homicide detectives were not called until about 40 minutes after the shooting, according to county police logs, and they arrived around 1:30 p.m. It was another hour before an investigator from the medical examiner’s office arrived.

and I can only imagine the horror the family, friends and neighbors felt. To show such disrespect for the deceased and his family is totally uncivil. America is better than this, but apparently Ferguson didn't get that memo.

essay on the same topic:

Bodies are not left in the streets of the leafy suburbs. The bodies of dogs and cats, or squirrels and raccoons, let alone the bodies of children, are not left in the streets of the leafy suburbs. No bodies are left in the streets of the financial districts. Freeze to death on a bench in the financial districts and you are whisked away before your inconvenient body can disturb the folks in line at the Starbucks across the street. But the body of a boy can be left in the street for four hours in a place like Ferguson, Missouri, and who knows whether it was because people wanted to make a point, or because nobody gave a damn whether he was there or not. Ferguson, Missouri was a place where they left a body in the street. For four hours. And the rage rose, and the backlash built, and the cameras arrived, and so did the cops, and the thing became something beyond what it was in the first place. And, in a very real way, in the streets of Ferguson, the body was still in the street.

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Sickening does not quite describe it. More frightening is the silence - where are all the religious heads who have 'so much things to say' (Marley) about abortion and birth control and how I should live my fugging life.
Where are the politicians, civil society leaders? Is this OK?

I take this back - they seem to like White men who parade around grocery stores with big scary guns.

a message to all of Ferguson's minority population and by extension american minority population. See your life means nothing. As one commenter said in all the garbage that has been said here and other forums, a minority person's(black) life is an "unnecessary thing"!!! Shades of the early southerners race relations and the murders of blacks. Left for ALL to see.

'Limited resources?' They have military-grade body armor, military weapons, armored vehicles and they lack the resources to properly process an officer shooting? If you believe that, I've got a crater to sell you in Arizona.

So many shots fired by the officer. It seems like he wanted him dead, no testimony-no witness. The way he was let to die on that street (making sure his life bled away . Why was his body was left on the pavement, at least, four hours (add abuse of a corps . I understand there were 11(eleven) shots fired according to a sound recording by a witness.
