And there are still those who believe the cops can be trusted:
By Sarah Wallace
BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- The tale of the police dashcam video has now helped clear a Bloomfield, New Jersey man who faced a multitude of criminal charges, including eluding police and assault.
Investigative Reporter Sarah Wallace obtained the dashcam tapes, and has spoken exclusively with the 30-year old DJ who was looking at years in prison.
It was quite a turnabout, all the criminal charges against Marcus Jeter have been dismissed, and two Bloomfield police officers have been indicted for falsifying reports, and one of them, for assault.
A third pleaded guilty early on to tampering. It's all thanks to those dashcam tapes. It's the video that prosecutors say they never saw when the pursued criminal charges against 30 year-old Marcus Jeter . In the video, his hands were in the air. He was charged with eluding police, resisting arrest and assault. One officer in the video can be seen throwing repeated punches.
Sarah Wallace: "It this tape hadn't surfaced?"
Marcus: "I'd be in jail."

(13,107 posts)When police break the law, the penalty should be doubled !!! (This should apply to judges and prosecutors as well)
They should be held to a higher standard.
It is their job to know the law.
It is their job to enforce the law.
The public is at the mercy of the officers, judges and prosecutors.

(15,429 posts)Good cops know that cameras help them convict and help them in all encounters to avoid a need for use of force. People act differently if they know they are on camera.

(13,218 posts)After all they should set a higher standard so that everyone else can aspire to it. Sounds ridiculously funny doesn't it (because of the criminally low standard they DO set), but that's the way it should be.

(20,818 posts)be fired and professionally disciplined. Why would they NOT have asked to see the dash cam video?.. That should have been the FIRST order of business for them, the first thing they considered. Did they just take the words of the cop on blind faith? Never mind, don't answer that. Sigh.

if I wanted just one (current/recent) story about this crap happening to a young white guy? It would go a long way to making me feel safe going home.
Okay ... I feel a bit better.

(1,727 posts)Not only did the cops who attacked him lie about the circumstances of the attack. The cops who drove him from the police station to the county lockup lied and claimed that he refused medical attention when the county detention facility would not accept his transfer due to the severity of his injuries.
This is problem with police culture. The willingness to casually lie about EVERY single interaction that they have with the public.

(31,849 posts)Please watch the video interview posted by Chakab.
It's guaranteed to upset you.
But on a positive note, this young Brother is about to get PAID!!!! And I suspect, the Bloomfield PD has forever damaged its relationship with the Prosecutor's Office ... not because they lied to the P/O; but because they didn't tell the P/O of the lie, making them look like fools before the Court.

(34,136 posts)Before pulling him out of the car one officer is yelling "Stop trying to get my gun!" Problem is you can SEE Jeter's hands in the air - he's not trying to get anything but out of that situation alive.
Same thing as they've got him on the ground punching him, one is yelling something about "Get off my gun." but Jeter is already handcuffed.
They were planning to have an excuse for beating him up.

(47,953 posts)But as the article notes, if there had not been video, the guy was facing a minimum of 5 years, and had done nothing wrong. And people wonder why cops are so feared and hated.
That Internal Affairs division should be brought up on obstruction charges too.

Maybe all cops should be disarmed, since unarmed people can so easily apparently take their guns from them.

(396 posts)What totally creeped me out is what I realize is the new cop litany:
Stop grabbing for my gun
Stop resisting
All the while they're beating the crap out of a young man for no apparent reason other than that they like to do this to black men.
Someone, please tell me it will end soon.

Tampering with those cameras should be a felony punishable by no less than 25 years imprisonment.
