I think he is absolutely 100% wrong on all of his positions and to the right of any mainstream Democrat in all respects.

Actually if it was a choice between Rand Paul and a DLC type Democrat like Hillary, I would probably support Rand Paul

I'm a Paulbot troll and I support Rand Paul. Blessed be his name and the loins that spawned him. May he reign a thousand years.

He is over all a right-wing reactionary. But like Pat Buchanan or Ron Paul and many Libertarians and Paleoconservatives, because of certain ideological peculiarities he happens to hold some positions on some foreign policy issues and some domestic civil libertarian issues that are actually more progressive than most mainstream Democrats. Still, he is over all a right-wing reactionary I could never actually support.

I could really go for some falafels with home made pita and a creamy tahini sauce right now.

(18,184 posts)We suffered through the first neocon era here on DU.
I thought the neocons went away in January 2009 but now they're back with a vengeance.
I want someone on the left to point that out too.

(1,284 posts)Domestic and foreign policy is much more complex than some simpletons in this country care to understand.
If you can sum up your thoughts on any domestic or foreign policy issue in only a few words, please don't vote or pontificate.

(35,317 posts)My boss read his (or his father's ... grandfather's ...?) "newsletter" back in the '80s. It was wildly loony. But that was 30 years ago and to be honest, that particular bit of American politics leaves me zzzzz.....
Where was I?
Oh. Right.
Other than that, no basis for an opinion. But falafels? Sure. With some cucumbers and tomatoes ...

To me, he's meh. I am not going to get worked up over him either way.

(25,026 posts)and by playing such a role he stumbles upon stopped clock syndrome at least rhetorically where he at least espouses positions to the left of many Democrats.
Is he a con? Absolutely and it is absolutely Democrats fault for giving him any purchase because they should own the territory he pretends to stand on (or if he actually does it was arrived at by some tortured logic that carries with it much that is horrible).
Get off the stupid and failed drug war craziness, stop slurping the FOP, stop the counter constitutional surveillance state, and get out of the military imperialism and he'd have less than zero support and all the crying and he wing and fucking would be better invested in demanding our party take good and sane positions.

(55,147 posts)There are actually Rand Paul supporters on this site which is unconscionable and what's even more unconscionable is the Admins of this site don't seem to have a problem with it (If they did they would automatically boot their asses in one shot and they could start with the one's that voted in this poll).
Please wake me up when this madness is over. Until then I will continue looking for like minded Democrats. The piece of shit Rand Paul doesn't deserve the time of day.
Un fucking believable.

(20,226 posts)I have heard it suggested by any number of people that sometimes he says some things they happen to agree with - at least as far as a few limited statements are concerned. That would have been more true with his father who was clearly more of an ideologue and less of a career opportunist. But like Pat Buchanan who would occasionally say things that made sense - underneath it all he was still a bigot and a reactionary and an opportunist to the extreme. I have not seen many people on DU who actually support Rand Paul though. I don't know if I have actually seen any. I suppose there are some who have said that he is to the left of Clinton on foreign policy. I don't agree with that. But there is a point where isolationism and anti-imperialism does overlap just as there is a point where liberal internationalism and Neo-conservatism overlaps. Either way there is not a snowball's chance in hell that an anti-interventionist is going to win the Republican nomination for President in 2016. That will not happen.
