Michael Sam sacks Johnny Manziel twice in Rams preseason game vs. Browns
One is a party boy, Heisman Trophy winner expected to revive a franchise that has spent decades in turmoil. The other is a symbol of progress and acceptance fighting to make the team. On Saturday, their worlds collided.
Rams defensive end Michael Sam sacked Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel as the NFLs two biggest stories of the offseason squared off against each other on Saturday night in Cleveland.
I think when the season starts there are going to be alot of teams that wished they had picked up Sam for their team. He is looking good in the pre-season and according to ESPN he's showering well too

(20,851 posts)and is on the bubble to make the 53 man roster. Word is the Rams might try to stash him on the practice squad but I think someone will poach him if they try. He's in a tough spot on a team loaded with talent at his position...

(58,656 posts)he'd have to clear waivers. I doubt he'd go unpicked. D-linemen are always in demand in the NFL, especially ones that can get to the QB.

(20,851 posts)The question is will they carry an extra DL and keep both young ends or will they try to slip one onto the practice squad. The chances of the practice squad move went up now that the Rams might need to shuffle extra QBs onto the team to find a suitable back-up. Everyone thinks Sam is going to end up somewhere but I wouldn't buy a Rams jersey just yet.
All that gossip is vastly more interesting than what ESPN is talking about.

(58,656 posts)Who knows. Not a lot of trades this time of year, what with the roster cut-sowns.
(My guys are the Seattle Seahawks) Oh, and the only ones I know that are 'talking' are fans on a website. I don't know what the FO wants to do.

(771 posts)Pedestrian as NFL talent goes. Sometimes heart/drive can be the edge that makes you an NFL regular. But in Sams case it just isn't quite enough. Game of inches and the physical part he gives up over the course of a game could be a weak spot in the defense. He can make plays but just as well get over-matched too easily too many times.
There's 5000 guys in the middle ground where he lives, just tough to make a difference in a field so crowded.
I think he is/was doing all he can though, making the Rams think twice. As mentioned they are stacked at that position. While he may be practice squad for them, he may be 53 man roster viable somewhere else. Never going to be a star but who knows, maybe he can hang around a few years. If he makes it 4 that's one more than NFL average.
I bet he won't, though. He'll tire of working so hard and never becoming every day starter. Other opportunities will pop up over next couple three years.

(5,586 posts)To keep Sam, the Rams would have to keep 9 defensive linemen. That's an extra linemen that doesn't play special teams. Tall order for him to make the Rams.
