Tonight, the resolution we all have been fighting for for so long has come to be. The Board of Directors has approved the sale of the company to the family of Arthur T. Demoulas and we are back in the building starting tomorrow! The entire management team including those fired and those who resigned will be back as well to start the process of rebuilding. Most importantly, ATD is back!!
Details are emerging as we write this but we wanted to let the world know that we have emerged from this crisis victorious! The STAKEHOLDERS have helped to Save Market Basket and in doing so, we have made history. Associates, vendors and most importantly, CUSTOMERS carried the banner for a company that is so much more than simply a company, but is rather an integral piece of every community it serves.
Tonight we raise a glass to Artie T and each other as we have achieved the most improbable of upsets. Tomorrow we go to work and never, in the history of people going to work, will so many people be so happy to punch the clock.
To our customers...words will never be able to express our appreciation of what you have accomplished. You are the lifeblood of who we are and we are eternally thankful to you. Please understand that we will be working around the clock to get every department in every store back up to speed and once we do, we will be better than ever!
WE ARE MARKET BASKET and WE ARE BACK!

(1,112 posts)I'm a lifelong Bostonian but I've only been going there a few years. It was out of the way for me and I didn't know how much cheaper it was. And I didn't know how well they treated their employees until I started hearing about the fight between the competing cousins maybe a year or so ago. I had been afraid that maybe the low prices were because they treated the workers like Wal-Mart does. How wrong I was. And now that word is out about what a great company it is, I think they'll be attracting more shoppers than ever...

I have boycotted and have gone through all that I had on my shelves. Why would anyone pay dollars more for the exact same item elsewhere.
Nope we are going back in droves!

(24,753 posts)They supported the employees and Artie T., and will return to Market Basket.
You shouldn't assume that customers didn't back the employees. That vast majority of Market Basket customers supported the employees and will return to Market Basket now that Artie T. is going to be returning.
Old and In the Way
(37,540 posts)Not only will they recover 98% of their previious custokers, but this story has been well covered in the tegion. There wil be a whole new segment of customers that will patronize MB now because they want to support enlightened anagement. The fact that MB delivers.more value to the customer interms of better overall savings, won't hurt either. Someone is going to get really hurt..Shaws, Shop and Sabe, Roche Brothers..not sure who, but MB os going to have a hreat 2015. 2014 will be ok, considering the 2 months loss of revenue and write downs..

It was so empty today that the Patriots could have held a practice session there.
The store was fairly well stocked except for the perishable stuff so they should be back to normal in a few days.

(4,112 posts)Thrilled for the specific outcome, and for the hope that it portends for a resurgence of stakeholder vs. shareholder capitalism. CEOs need to remember that the ultimate boss is not the Board, and not the shareholder, but the CUSTOMER, whether that's an individual consumer or a B2B buyer.
graywarrior
(59,440 posts)MANative
(4,112 posts)they are... NOTHING WITHOUT the people who make them work. The entity is unquestionably not a person, regardless of what the moronic fools on the Supreme Court say, but the corporation can only exist because of its people and the work, goods and services they produce. Maybe some of them will start to get that message now.
graywarrior
(59,440 posts)There aren't many like him. I saw an interview with a guy who works for MB whose daughter was in a car accident and suffered brain injury. He said Artie made sure she got the best medical care and she recovered enough to be able to work at one of the stores. She said Artie saved her life and she will be forever grateful. He's a unique individual.
MANative
(4,112 posts)Will serve as an inspiration for other leaders, and that the Market Basket example will demonstrate what a committed, engaged workforce can accomplish. Can you imagine what would happen to corporate productivity if everyone loved their jobs as much as MB associates do? That can't happen without two-way commitment and two-way loyalty, the kind that has been sorely lacking since Reagan and his clowns twisted the corporate model to benefit only financial investors.
graywarrior
(59,440 posts)Those workers perform mundane work all day long, stocking shelves, standing in cold refrigerators, cutting up vegetables in the produce room (I've done that--it ain't fun!). But they all love one another and they have fun at work. The managers play goofy jokes on the workers, the workers retaliate...it's a fun place to be when they're all on the job.

(8,976 posts)Market Basket strike and boycott ended 11:24 pm with the workers winning.Strike lasted 41 days and we never made a full shopping trip in that time. That's FABULOUS news, graywarrior! And thanks for keeping us updated about it. Yours is the only regular coverage I've seen on this, anywhere. Don't have a Market Basket anywhere near me, but I'm thrilled to hear this! If there was one, I'd shop there starting tomorrow. And I would have enjoyed taking part in some of the protests, too. SO satisfying when efforts like this actually produce a great outcome! We've all seen FAR too much lately that seems to want to convince us that the bad guys are supposed to win all the time. Well, here's one case in which the GOOD GUYS prevailed! The way it SHOULD be!

(17,110 posts)I've watched your dispatches from the front, Graywarrior, as this movement unfolded. I am filled with joy and respect for the entire Market Basket community, who showed us how to do it.
This is the feel-good story of the year, so far. Labor history has been made.
Now let's go kick republican ass in the elections.
graywarrior
(59,440 posts)A lot of these workers are so anti political. Some are hardcore republicans or independents. But everyone worked together on this. It gave me hope.
This story does give one hope. Is it true that this company is non-union?
graywarrior
(59,440 posts)They did it on their own. I don't think they wanted a union to stand between them and Artie.

The biggest thing is that they actually won. We never see workers win.
I just hope the Arthur S asshole mob isn't planning some kind of ALECy sabotage. I wonder who Arthur T's shares go to if he should meet with an accident. Cuz that's what mobs do.

(10,749 posts)You know, it really is a remarkable thing to have employees, vendors, customers, etc. rally around a corporation like this. Nothing quite like it comes to mind.
I'm a Hannaford shopper and, to be honest, have never been a big fan of shopping at Market Basket, but that doesn't diminish what has happened here.

(53,235 posts)However, their organic produce has gotten slimmer.
Hannaford is fine, but it exists for investors, not shoppers. MB has proven it has a different business model.
