Is there a DUer who just disappeared that you miss?

Today, two longtime members announced that they are stepping away, and this has led to some discussion about the so-called "GBCW" threads. Some have suggested that the threads serve, if nothing else, the purpose of letting DUers know that the poster has left the group, and relieves any anxiety over whether they are sick or dead. OTOH, some DUers have just fallen away. "Prosense" is a name that came up in another thread. I'm sure there are others.

If you are wondering where a DUer went, post the name here. Perhaps some posters know "...the rest of the story." Perhaps others are as mystified as you are.

I mean, if someone advocates the election of Mitt Romney here, then they deserve hides and a pizza, but so long as the view expressed is one that is found under the Big Tent of the Democratic Party, there's just no justification for shutting people up.

The ToS tells us pretty much what we need to know, but I think some of these hides have little to nothing to do with being civil to one another, not calling each other names or disparaging them in other ways, and everything to do with "I don't like THAT opinion, so shut the hell up!"

So many times, I will see a thread just starting and I wait, knowing the players who are going to start posting. Then I watch the taunting start like a group of six year old bullies.

The internet is rife with people who under cover of their usernames, believe their opinions are more important than any other Democrat certainly and anyone in general.

You see in all kinds of forums, groups, pages on Facebook, anywhere on the internet where more than two people posting at the time.

It's very discouraging.

the nature and purpose of that woman's posts. If her posts on DU didn't make it bleedingly obvious that she was clueless than those Tweets sure as hell do.

Not only did she post nonsense (which certainly explains the quality of her fan base) but I just remember her bragging on and on about how many HUNDREDS of DUers that she had on ignore. She seemed to be genuinely proud of that. Considering that most of DU is only populated by a couple of hundred individual posters I just thought that was demented.

for the rest of us here assembled. Shutting people up via the alert system is a two-edged sword--if the HIDE is a bogus one, like this one was, it makes them more fearful of speaking honestly, and it reduces their voices on juries.

I do hope the jurors who voted to HIDE are a bit embarrassed. I suspect they may have bought a mischaracterization by an alerter without checking out the material themselves.

when all was well again, I attempted to log in to my old account and found that I had lost/forgotten my password. I had a slight mistrust of NSA-type activity here so at the time I first signed on to DU back in 2005, I used a throwaway email address that I could no longer access when I decided to come back. So, I abandoned my old account and created a new one. No sock, no zombie, just a lost email address.

164. And the suspicion you see out here is nothing compared to what you see in MIRT land.
Thu Aug 28, 2014, 11:49 AM
Aug 2014

Whenever anyone showed up who seemed to know more than they could have uncovered during the days since they formally joined was immediately suspect. Drove me nuts.

The forum is wide open to the public - anyone can (and many do) read for quite a while before joining. It is no harder to figure out the personalities that way than to actually log in. (Not to mention the innocent reasons for having actually been a member and changed names.)

liked would disappear, victims of their own openness and abducted by the spooks because of it. When I realized no one was being abducted and renditioned to Romania, I felt comfortable enough to join the discourse. Even then I worried a little at every knock on the door, for while. Then it was fear of landing on the no-fly list.

Of course none of that happened.

however, my question was just observational and not accusatory.

along with the long time lurkers, admins have been clear that some people are allowed back from bans if they behave. others have needed to change usernames for various reasons.

Ms. Toad

(34,073 posts)
187. More often than not, it isn't - and often the justification is that
Thu Aug 28, 2014, 01:34 PM
Aug 2014

new posters are banned by MIRT for "offenses" which would not even get a post hidden by a long time member - and since they were banned, then the suspicions were justified. I'd suggest it is the other way around. In many cases, rather than the ultimate banning justifying the initial suspicion, newer members who seem to know too much are banned because they were subjected to unreasonable suspicion and scrutiny.

Not to mention that your observational phrasing is the exact same way I have seen the question asked in a thread AFTER an observation has been made in MIRT that "so-and-so" sure knows a lot for someone who just joined - often accompanied by someone volunteering to check them out, popping into a thread, and "observing" that they seem to know an awful lot.

I find such observations get in the way of new people feeling welcome here, particularly because they are rarely just observations.

238. My point is that the stats are influenced by the suspicion.
Thu Aug 28, 2014, 04:33 PM
Aug 2014

When MIRT starts out out from the first day of membership suspecting someone is a troll or a zombie, it isn't hard for MIRT to find an excuse to PPR the poster - even when (as happened several times when I was on MIRT), individual MIRT members state their opposition to a hasty PPR. There were a number of times when I specifically opposed banning someone, and asked to be given time to review the posts, and the member was banned almost immediately. Sometimes by MIRT members who deliberately ignored my (and others') requests to wait - and other times because the person doing the banning never checked for open discussion threads before unilaterally issuing a PPR.

So looking at the stats of who ended up being banned would prove nothing more than that those who were suspicious got their way.

I find the practice of assuming that someone is a troll until proven otherwise offensive - so my goal is raising the issue whenever I see the assumption is to remind people that this is an open forum - anyone who is not a member can still see nearly everything general members can see (ATA and hidden posts being the exception). There are no secrets - so it should be no surprise (or cause for suspicion) if someone who joined yesterday happens to know things that happened last year.

Thu Aug 28, 2014, 04:41 PM

Ms. Toad

277. It wasn't a lot of people who were acting unilaterally -
Thu Aug 28, 2014, 05:53 PM
Aug 2014

but there were a few who did it regularly enough - who were doing it just because they could (based on their comments when called on it) to annoy the crap out of me.

There are particularly blatant situations, in which case prompt - and even unilateral - action was appropriate. What I'm talking about are the borderline cases where the decision to PPR someone was primarily based on the suspicion that someone was a troll or zombie.

And I will say that I sometimes read posts from DUers that some MIRTers wanted to ban, but we didn't, for lack of consensus. In hindsight, oh yeah, they were in fact trolls.

That said, I do alert on people who are nasty to DUers with low post counts and/or short longevity. Not everyone who's new or reticent is a troll and some oldtimers are extremely hostile to noobs.

NMSA, Paco (gave great accounts from Venezuala during the attempted Chavez coup), ProudPatriot and her bouncy sig, Indiana Green, Swamprat, Forest Gump, and a myriad of others.

I don't post like I used to (I think I scored 452-43K of my posts in the first 4 years - and have barely climbed to 46K in the following 7 years) so I may have just missed some news - or postings (Jitterbug and PP may still post).

NMSA made a move to force herself to moveon (not quite a Walt Starr), and is well. I heard - long after the fact - that Indiana Green (who could get pretty heated), got tombstoned way back when. I have no idea what happened to oilwellian, swamprat, or Paco.

Ironically, I think when I stopped posting so much (super long work weeks will do that), I think initially some noticed and wondered/worried. Now most folks save the oldtimers don't know/recognize me. But were I to leave, I would give a tip of the hat so folks would know.

Aug 2014

this exercise is bringing back great memories. And there was a witty poster from NYC whose name is escaping me but I think it had a double b and a double o. Shortly after he had a child, I stopped seeing him (same with Newton.)

I read alot - but now is a rare moment in time, when I have time to post.

NSMA is well - but stays out of discussion boards and social media like FB. I have no idea about swamp rat, nor another New Orleans poster whose same is close but far from the tip of my tongue (or fingertips) who posted post-Katrina about challenges with the trailors/getting reports, etc. Her name started with a d and like blm had three letters (IRCC)

Did you mean "meh"? I remember she had trouble with trailors and all kinds of messes after Katrina.

You must know NSMA then? Good, if you ever think of it tell her I say hello and wish her well.

For some reason I am not recalling Newton. There have been so many come and go.

I am thinking Swampy eventually made it to Brazil. I think he had a girlfriend there and had spent quite a bit of time there himself. I know the last time I talked with him here that he was still living with his Dad (I am pretty sure that is correct) and they still, several years after the hurricane, had no hot water and barely cold. I so hope he is well.

Thanks. Yewberry, I appreciated your list below. While I have pulled in bits and pieces of memories across numerous posts - you consolidated a list of folks that I enjoyed reading and interacting with, and whose memories of the impressions they left upon me (as I read their names) was on of gratitude for having the opportunity for those interactions.

I view Du, today, as a place for news - and a pulse of responses to that news. For me it is no longer a community of which I am an active part (though this thread has let me relive a little of that through interactions with other old Duers who are not terribly active but have responded on this thread.)

I venture to guess that for many current active posters this venue gives a similar sense of community as it did to us in earlier years. However due to the volume of posters - I would also venture to guess that only the most confident in voice, and those willing to move beyond snark as means of communication - find that same type of community.

Wow - your later post pushed me into some philosophical musings that I should probably just keep to myself. Regardless - I thank you for giving me the impetus for the musings.

Peace,

Now THERE is an actual, real gaping hole on DU.

But then, that was someone who never went in for self-congratulatory bs or the like... Who simply showed up and fought the good fight, and defended her right to make up her own mind on her own terms.

The word "loss" is tossed around too easily, when anyone can post a GBCW thread in GD, drum up 100 "please don't go" responses, and then make a dramatic exit, only to show up six months later "I'm back!!!! miss me?"

And we're talking about screen names, fake nom de plumes by people who, for all we know, have 20 socks in the drawer. Raindog was a real loss, an actual loss.

The good ones don't announce their leaving. The great ones, like raindog- man, I sure wish I could have at least said goodbye.

They flamed out years ago after being relentlessly stalked and bullied by a couple of nasty homophobes who are still here but now pretending to be LGBT allies.

Seems like the stalkers and bullies and trolls never go away. It's always the decent people we lose.

I know it was in response to the sad day of departure - and then the somewhat mocking following thread per goodbye threads.

But, I don't post much - but have been here since January 2002 (lurked since nov 2001). I have gotten news of folks I miss, seen folks I haven't seen in far too long, and with old friends remembered others who were dear to us as part of the community. Thank you for this opportunity.

It's great that you remember me and yes, I do remember with fondness our exchanges on the board as well as our e-mail communications in addition to our meeting. Your friendship and support meant a lot to me at that time and still does

I wish I could say that I had multiple degrees to my name -and I'm deeply touched by your faith in my intelligence! -but life doesn't always work out the way you'd planned/hoped. The last decade has been a huge rollercoaster ride for me, full of some great highs and some deeply depressing lows, and I guess I'm still kind of searching for my purpose and direction.

I remember how busy you were with work and your commitments and hope the last decade has been good to you and that you are now in a happy place in life and enjoying it.

I hope to see more of you on here -you are one of those posters who made DU such a great place to be and a much lesser place for your absence

Peace

Aug 2014

I always enjoy seeing you. If I recall our life paths had many similarities (per areas of living and work; as well as some academic experiences.) I am glad you are still around, albeit like me, not posting much.

The first year with the jury system on DU3, and its sympathetic support to appologists for sexual assault - in the days (and then weeks, and then months) after Steubanville - left me less likely to participate. It's odd, though. I stepped even further back (dropped the star membership, posted even less) - but in the ensuing time the tone on current similar topic threads is significantly different. Maybe currents were changing and minds were opening - and it just took a lot of time and conversations for those currents to take hold.

See, I still try to hold onto positive hope. Like that the ripples and currents started 3 summers ago in the summer/fall of Occupy - have changed the nature of many political conversations. Indeed the younger generation in my family (all college students or recent graduates) - have a much broader sense of social responsibility mixed with cynicism towards the way things are now. They (and the students I work with) keep giving me glimmers of hope. As does (despite how frustrating and cantankerous it can be) this forum. It's why I sill read it - even if I don't participate much.

Said way to much - sorry. It is good to see you Lydia. Hope life is treating you well.

regards,

salin

Since she was homeless and had many other difficulties, I have often wondered if she was OK.

She posted about the problems of the very poor and the homeless, and her posts were often quite angry, even unreasonably so. She also had a hair-trigger temper, so she would get into angry exchanges with people who were actually on her side, so she ended up alienating a lot of people who were potential allies in her cause.

When she suddenly disappeared from DU, without a final GBCW post, I thought perhaps she had just gotten so angry that she decided to write off DU altogether.

But since she was homeless and very poor, I have always worried that she might have come to some harm. I even started a thread once some time ago asking if anyone knew whether she was OK. I had no personal connection or interaction with her--but I did hope she was as safe as possible, considering her circumstances.

Aug 2014

though it is fresh I would add Raindog (RIP)

I was trying to recall mehr's name earlier today.

If you haven't done so already, read through the thread. Might spark some memories to preserve.

Here is a take away if any younger to the board DUers are still reading.

Snark doesn't get you remembered. Snark can be okay in its place. However, commitment to a particular cause - and educating others in the course of many discussions; readiness to discuss even through disagreement to find points of agreement - per civil discourse; Responding to other posters as individuals (and getting to know a little about them and their context) such that there is human communication; these are the characteristics of the posters who haven't posted - in some cases for six or more years - who are still repeatedly mentioned and remembered on this thread. The spirit of how and what you post - is the face you give to others and the face that is either remembered (or not), and the face that is missed per the contribution to the greater community - even when the voice was not always in agreement with others.

Wow - I feel like an old crone (and I am not yet *that* old) to feel able to distill what I think is wisdom (I could be all wet) about this board.

Sorry for the long response. Given your list (similar to mine done in parts - per commonalities of names) - and how long some of our favorites have been gone - yet those are who we recall... I felt compelled to reflect and share the reflection. Sue me.

Peace,

salin

add Saphire Blue. I weep for these losses - but I celebrate that for the internet and DU - we would have missed being touched by these (and those on your original list - marked by the RIP).

I absolutely remember the feeling of family. I hope that more active, current posters, find that as well - though I would guess that it would be easier to find in subforums than in the big forums. However the subforums that I follow are pretty inactive so it would be hard to forge the sense of family and community. I hope, but have no idea, if such a feeling is found among current active posters.

I can say, that this thread has been amazing for me, to reconnecting with that feeling, per reconnecting with names and voices that I have long valued (from long ago discussions) - but who like me - are not terribly active.

As I write this I think of another name who I periodically see, and have always valued, who I didn't mention. Armstead. Like me - he has wavered between optimism for the future and cynicism of our reality. Every time I see him post - I read it. Always thoughtful. Makes me think.

Thinking of him makes me realize while we have lost our sense of community (at least for us oldtimers) there are a good number of us still here. How do we reconnect and rebuild that sense of connectedness?

With that thought - after several days of a lot of time on my hands - I won't have much time until Tuesday. So if you suddenly find responses several days from now - forgive me, but let's continue the conversation and bring others on this thread into that conversation.

Peace and great appreciation for the food for thought,

salin

Gosh, there are so many.

I honestly don't think that newcomers in the big forums can really experience the 'old' community. Maybe I'm wrong-- I'd really like to be wrong on this-- but I don't know that we can get that back.

There have been so many people that have been a piece of my day or my life here. Certainly too many to remember and too many to list. But DU has been part of my life for a very long time. I confess I don't love the current incarnation of DU-- but I surely don't want to lose my connection to the wonderful people that have come into my through DU. You, salin, are one of those. So many like you.

I don't know how to fix this. This has been home for so long-- but I do find myself feeling completely alone here these days.

I'll be here, low poster as ever, but here nevertheless. My schedule is horrifying also. so no need to apologize for delayed responses.

Thank you so much for talking to me. I may have been here forever, but I have lost too many of my friends here. I hate how alone I feel here these days.

Best to you and yours, and many thanks for reminding me of the best of times here.

Blue_In_AK would remember another one. I'm blanking on his screen name, but his real name was Terry. He lived in Washington state, and had at least one son. Another very skilled and generous photographer, whose life ended way too soon.

I know he didn't exactly "disappear suddenly" and NanceGreggs still posts an occasional piece.

Sure do miss me some DUzy's!

She was my fellow host, in all the same forums, was a prolific and interesting poster, and we became friends. She hasn't posted since April and I can't help but worry. She's also on Twitter and stopped participating at around the same time.

Even before I posted here, I loved reading his posts in The DU Lounge. He sadly passed away earlier this year.

Seems Like A Dream... I think she was one of the more well informed and fearless (over what has only gotten worse on DU)

I must have a rotten memory, because I recall lurking a lot, but not consistently enough to recall as many as have been called out on this thread!

Some other folks I'll really miss, or certainly haven't seen lately -

408. Spooked911 was the greatest conspiracy theorist to ever post on DU

Yes, he believe that everything was a conspiracy. But his arguments were always highly intelligent and went into great detail to the point where his rivals were at loss for words. His two biggest nemesis' were a guy with a Frank Zappa avatar (name possibly Zappaman) and another with a Ted Kennedy avatar (totally forget his name). I used to love watching them fight.

409. Sorry to hear about Dookus

I haven't been here in quite a while and hadn't heard about his death. Very sad. He couldn't have been too old.

Maybe a decade ago I was in a sarcastic little spat with Dookus. I can't remember the topic but we were having a good time. Lots of off the wall zig zag responses, eventually veering quite far from the original topic. For some reason I assumed Dookus was a girl. I remember backing off in that thread, not wanting to get too abusive with a woman, even if obviously none of it was serious.

Then a few days later I saw someone refer to Dookus as a he. I felt like an idiot.

Anyway, regarding the theme of the thread, in my early months on this site I appreciated Dolstein. He had a good balanced view of the party and the prospects of certain candidates. He insisted that Kerry simply wasn't special enough and would fall short. It wasn't popular to agree, and Dolstein suffered plenty of critics, but I respected his perspective.

Dolstein and Carlos Jiacinto would often counter TruthIsAll in some of the conspiracy threads and 99.99% certainty threads. Later that task fell upon febble and OnTheOtherHand in the original Election Reform forum. I have no idea if any of them still post here but they deserve mention.

Jiacinto went on tilt and was banished. He surfaced at DailyKos, at least for a couple of years. I've been out of the loop and lack updates. But Jiacinto was very helpful in my early months on this site. I'd post numbers related analysis and he pointed me to some relevant books, ones I still have.
