Seen quite a few knuckleheads on the Internets dissing this challenge. They have no idea what they are talking about.CAMBRIDGE (CBS) The CEO of a Massachusetts ALS research organization said donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge are responsible for expediting the timeline of a clinical drug trial by two years.
Dr. Steve Perrin, the CEO and chief scientific officer of ALS Therary Development Institute in Cambridge, said the organization will invest $1.5 million to partner with another company, aiming to have their drug in clinical trials by early 2015.
Perrin said ALS TDI was able to move the timeline up by two years because of the $3 million it raised through the Ice Bucket Challenge.

(4,276 posts)1. Still probably too late
for my dearest friend's husband. He has to have a feeding tube put in next Thursday.
He was diagnosed with ALS slightly over a year ago and already his speech is unintelligible and his neck muscles too weak to hold up his head for more than an hour or so at a time.
However, he continues to work on his tree farm for as long a time as he can each day. He's a stubborn old cuss and we love him dearly.
ALS is a hateful disease.

(17,202 posts)4. Well, the objections about diminishing returns have merit.
But they ignore the fact that before the returns of a surge investment diminish, they create a surge. Hence the two-year impact.
I can usually find the cloud in every silver lining, but the purpose of complaining about donating for health care research evades me.
