Jim Turner wept in mourning at the loss of a friend last Thursday. I say all the time its a wonder that these dogs have any affection, Turner said, his voice quivering. And Wonder will be remembered. He had value. He had worth.
The Muncie, Indiana resident and animal behavioral consultant was emotionally exhausted from having opened his heart to a battered victim recovered from a local dog fighting bust, a dog injured so badly that ultimately, it could only be relieved by mercy. He was nameless, scarred, broken. And in his final days, he experienced love and human kindness for the first time.
The discovery of 25 pit bulls in a Muncie home that police believe were used for dog-fighting had prompted Turner to reach out to this unfortunate soul, and against his better judgement, he fell for the dog. In an interview with the Star Press, Turner says the memory of the dog and the suffering it experienced kept him up at night. At 2 a.m., he writes a brief note:
He had no name. What he did have was 100 scars on his face, head and body, along with 30 scabs and open wounds on his face, Turner recited. Sick and suffering, I took him out for fresh air. He walked on grass cautiously, as if it were a foreign surface. It was; as all he had known in his few years of existence were illegal dog-fighting rings and filthy cages where he bled and suffered alone.

I am glad Wonder knew love and comfort at the end of his life, at least. Bless Mr. Turner, I agree.

(16,254 posts)Dogs are particularly trusting and love without reserve. Bless Mr. Turner for his heart and time he spent letting Wonder know the world isn't full of jerks, although we seem to have our share.

(182 posts)It wouldn't do for coworkers to see a grown man weeping openly in his cubicle.
God Bless Turner, God Bless Wonder, and God damn the bastards who abused him! God damn their souls to Hell!

There must be a special place in hell for those who abuse the defenseless: children, the elderly, the disabled and animals.

(20,821 posts)too many, including here on DU, were more than willing to give him. THIS is the kind of horror he helped bear responsibility for and no, I will NOT give him a pass or just dismiss what he did.

(30,253 posts)Not the dogs, but the people who committed these atrocities. Actually, it's an insult to animals. These people are monsters.
Poor, unloved dog. I'm so gald that his finals days were filled with tenderness.
Rest in peace, Wonder.

(1,944 posts)about Mr. Turner befriend Wonder and their love for one another. I could picture Mr. Turner laying down with Wonder and then taking him outside - imagine the first time on grass - I love the photo - there is so much love in that photo - thank you so much Mr. Turner for giving me a smile today, for letting me know we have some lovely caring, unselfish people in the world.
But I am also so angry that in the world today we have such beasts that would do this to animals - we need much stricter laws for those that abuse animals - the laws today are very antiquated and abusers often get away with a fine.
And Wonder - romp free little boy - hope you are pain free and enjoy being an angel and just have fun.

(33,688 posts)There is nothing that gets me more emotionally distraught than abuse of animals.
I cannot fathom how even the most bent arrows can be deliberately cruel to animals.
