Of course that has not happened and never will.
But what if that happened, as actually happened with the GOP and the Kochs? How much coverage would the mass media give then to an outrageous corruption and openly exposed political whoring? This distortion by McConnell and the GOP of the role of a public official sworn to represent the people, not the corporations, not just for licking the soiled boots of rich donors behind closed doors and cackling over how all the rubes will vote for you if only you have enough money, this distortion is actively being avoided by the mass media.
Why? Why the double standard?
Dark money requires dark rooms, I get that. I also get it is an abomination and reeks of fascism.
How much have the mass media given to the outrageous corruption just now exposed?
The myth of the liberal media, what more proof do you need?
Fucking tan suits and feigned shock that having a strategy for anything involves planning the strategy first, idiots.
The mass media, I hesitate to even use the word "media" these days, always wants to put the cart before the horse, the 24 hour a day endless media news cycle horse track demands it, how else to fill the stands!

FWIW - I agree with the premise that no one should be able to use their money to unilaterally change the direction of the nation; not even the good guys. I think campaign contributions are only part of the problem; all the think tanks and charities setting public policy are warping the process as well. For example - Bill Gates is using his money for two excellent goals - getting kids vaccinated and improving sanitation;

On the other hand, he is also working to modify the public school system into what he thinks it should be. Maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong, but who made hie the decider?
Big money dedicated to what appears to be a laudable goal has gone horribly wrong in the past:

(23,946 posts)And the OP is disingenuous in thinking our side doesn't do it. The President regularly meets with business titans and financial wizards. They're not talking about the weather. The rich have far too much influence in our politics. It's happening on both sides.
You are also correct about Gates; it's quite a coincidence that all the initiatives that he peddals tend to make large sums of money for himself and his friends. He's using his "foundation" as a way to weasel his way in and then demand that the donation be used to buy vaccines from the companies he owns stock in. So a vaccine combo that used to cost $1.50 now costs $38. Plus, it's also a way to conduct human trials in the 3rd world. He's doing the same to push GMOs into Africa. All with a nice big helping of PR so we all think he's a saint.

(9,126 posts)There must be some PR marketing firm that knows how to pull the heart strings of the left to neuter their response when these guys do despicable things. (The right doesn't care who gets screwed because FUIGM and Jeezus). We're supposed to applaud them for making lots of money--no matter how they made it--and then applaud them for doing charitable acts that are really building monopolies under the guise of helping. It's gross and latte liberals eat it up.
