Phyllis Schlafly: Women Can Avoid Sexual Assault By Focusing on Marriage, Not Career

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/phyllis-schlafly-women-can-avoid-sexual-assault-focusing-marriage-not-career

In her radio address yesterday, Phyllis Schlafly took on the issue of domestic violence and sexual assault, which she said could be eliminated if women would just get married instead of focusing so much on their careers.

Noting that “marriage settles men down,” Schlafly asked, “So what’s the answer for women who worry about male violence? It’s not to fear all men. It’s to reject the lifestyle of frequent 'hookups,' which is so much promoted on college campuses today, while the women pursue a career and avoid marriage.”

We all know that married men can still be violent to their families, but they are far less likely to be violent against women than are live-in boyfriends.

Why is this? It’s true that women who have found men who are already better partners are more likely to marry them, but it’s also true that marriage settles men down. Being married makes a man care more about his family’s expectations and future because he sees his family as enduring. It also makes him more faithful and committed to his partner. Marriage makes men directly protective of their wives, and living in a home with their daughters gives them the opportunity to be directly protective of them as well. Marriage also creates indirect protection for wives and daughters, because married women and their children tend to live in safer neighborhoods.

She can't possibly believe that there was no violence against women before 1970. Did she read history? We could go back to Roman times and talk about the rape of Lucretia--not a career woman--and married to Tarquin, the seventh (and last) king of Rome.

She wants families and women to suffer because she didn't get her way 40 years ago. ALEC was created as a direct response to Roe v. Wade. She helped craft the laws we slept through that have created the bastardized society we have today. History is not for wimps.

Research ALEC.

Ability to earn a living for yourself helps to get you out of those situations. If that fails restraining orders, a guard dog, a gun, and a protective father may also help.

but I have been part of a household in which the domestic abuse was like a trap because the woman could not free herself due to the economic situation. Kids also complicate those situations since the abuser retains visitation rights.

Having a marketable skill set can at least open up additional choices. Think about women who don't even have driver's licenses. My daughters are working towards engineering and nursing degrees, and I am doing everything in my power to support those efforts. I have told them more than once if they ever are struck by someone to file charges and immediately terminate any relationship. After growing up seeing that crap I am sure I won't have my daughters exposed to it (also the alcohol abuse, verbal abuse etc). I frankly will take more direct action if it comes to my daughters being threatened by someone.

On the wider policy side I am a supporter of strong laws against domestic abuse. Also a contributor to women's shelters in this area. My daughter has volunteered to play with children that are in the shelter with their moms.

The Vietnam draft was still a salient recent memory. But the volunteer military was already a thing of the present and a draft was not likely.

I do remember the fear of unisex bathrooms. The recent law in California about the trangendered and bathrooms actually has brought that contingent back, although they're sounding more ridiculous now.

The world marched on and we never got ERA.
