Wisconsin Democrats May Sacrifice Primary Election to Oust Gov. Walker Early
In a huge twist, Wisconsin Democrats now have the potential to remove Scott Walker before he even has a chance to face off with a Democratic challenger. With the out-of-nowhere candidacy of progressive activist Arthur Kohl-Riggs on the Republican ticket Democrats could now vote out Walker in the Republican primary. Wisconsin law allows an open primary in which Democrats can vote in the Republican primary, or vice versa.
In recent weeks Democrats have come under fire for not unanimously endorsing a single Walker challenger. That coupled with weeks of speculation that Republicans would vote in the Democratic primary in an attempt to sway the endorsement to the least electable candidate had until Mr. Kohl-Riggs candidacy today left Democrats very vulnerable and without many options. With the introduction of this activist candidate Democrats are again back on the offensive.
A large enough show of force by Democrats during the primary could eliminate the Governor from the ballot altogether and secure an instant victory. All four Democrats fighting for the partys nomination are all veteran Democratic leaders. Assuming there is no question amongst Democrats that any of their candidates are better than Walker they would be acting in their own best interest to choose to let their own primary play out like a roll of the dice and secure the win early.

(26,004 posts)Repugs are so short-sighted that they cannot even fathom the possibility that their nefarious plans can be used by the opposition as well.

(12,287 posts)It would work better if we had A candidate for our side instead of a bunch. We'll have to sacrafice voting in the Dem primarie to cross over and vote for Kohl-Riggs in the repub side because I don't believe we can vote in both catagories...just pick one. So I'm not sure enough Dems will cross over to vote Kohl-Riggs to beat the repubs and tps that will come out to vote for Walker. Unless of course the tps and repubs don't know there is someone running against Walker and just stays home for the primaries....
If Kohl-Riggs can beat Walker in the primaries than we'd have 2 Dems on the final ballet to chose from for Governor.

(33,497 posts)not enough democrats are going to vote in the GOP primary instead of voting in the Dem primary to select a candidate to go up against Walker. For one thing it is highly doubtful that enough democrats will even know that Walker's GOP opponent is a "progressive activist" and even if they did know that is no guarantee that fans of Tom Barrett and Kathleen Falk would vote for him rather than the candidate they support.
Unfortunately the Democratic primary is going to be highly competitve especially between Barrett and Falk and that will mean a big turnout for the democratic primary.
Now, yes, if the Dems had only one candidate or one strong canddiate and one weak one then maybe it could work. But with Barrett and Falk both strong it won't work.
