(14,544 posts)e was going to wear a white suit on Tuesday. White after Labor Day! His tailor will be brought in to testify before the Senate, hearings will be held. Even the people who made his socks will be hauled in before the special hearings. Then the impeachment hearings will begin. Just wait until the republicans get his exact measurements on the Senate record. Accusations of wearing lifts in his shoes, not wearing a flag pin. Oh, the headlines write themselves.

(10,893 posts)who the true conservatives are in Washington versus the true out-of-control spenders. Funny how that has worked over the last 3 decades.
This is another reason why I very rarely refer to Republicans as conservatives. There's nothing conservative about them anymore; just regressive.

(11,833 posts)It's also why I have my news tuned here to DU. The stuff on corporate tv isn't news, it's corporate propaganda. Yelling & screaming. I read lots of other news too, including some of the corporate sites just to see what they say is 'news'. It's largely baby in the well, man on fire, so and so is dating so and so crapola.
Hope you're enjoying a nice long weekend!

(34,589 posts)It's called austerity.
For example, Obama effectively just cut pay for government workers and the military after inflation:

The Republicans are huge Deficit Hawks. This figure should please them...although they won't admit it.

(10,274 posts)When it's their pol that wins the whole shebang, however, they could give a fuck about how big the debt is.
Completely obvious and undeniable reality proven out over the last quarter century.
But, somehow, someway, the simple minded masses in this country just reflexively know BIG SPENDING DEMOCRATS and FISCAL CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS ...
It truly is hopeless ...

(11,841 posts)this OP refers to the budget deficit being reduced. Which COULD eventually have a positve effect on our huge debt.

(7,143 posts)It's sound economic policy. Until the deficit is zeroed-out, debt reduction is severely hampered. And until the debt is brought down to a healthy level, federal spending is inordinately concentrated on servicing said debt. Accordingly, spending on domestic needs (infrastructure, welfare, et al.) is stymied, if not wholly reversed.
Republican policy is to wipe out debt, which is counter-productive. A manageable debt, reasonable interest rates, low inflation and full employment (4-5%) are the hallmarks of a strong economy. And Democratic policy.
Eliminating the deficit is non-partisan. How each party views the rationale, however, is what distinguishes the sides.

(22,308 posts)You need to also look at economic growth, comparing what he inherited and what now exists.
The goal (IMO) is to have deficit, as a percentage of GDP, smaller than the growth of GDP and to stabilize the economy so that we stay "right side up".
The other half of this equation is that President Obama inherited an economy that was shrinking at historic rates. It is now growing steadily.

P.S. Projections have the deficit down to around 2% by the time President Obama leaves office.

(647 posts)we are being pummeled with ads against Senator Mark Udall to "Repeal Obamacare." The ads are carefully crafted by Karl Rove's Americans for Prosperity group using information that has absolutely nothing at all to do with Obamacare from a study that was done prior to the ACA, to boot.
