Why J-Law's “Dirty” Photos Shouldn’t — & Probably Won’t — Make You Think Differently About Her

The photos of Lawrence are explicit and NSFW, but there’s nothing to suggest anything darker than the sexual appetites of her characters in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. Lawrence offers so much of herself for us to consume; the problem is that once that audience’s hunger is in place, it becomes increasingly difficult, especially in the digital age, for anyone — star, publicist, fan — to police and control it. Don’t mistake that for victim-blaming: Just because someone is likable and charismatic and a public figure doesn’t mean that they should, or deserve to be an open target; nevertheless, they become so.

Those roles, along with Lawrence’s mainstream turn in the Hunger Games trilogy and dozens of interviews, photo shoots, and public appearances, have constructed a star image best described as that of the Cool Girl, a type whose maxim is to be chill and don’t be a downer; act like a dude but look like a supermodel. Go crazy for pizza while looking gorgeous on the red carpet. Fulfill the most pleasing parts of femininity without any of the parts that annoy, perturb, or otherwise highlight just how difficult it actually is to be a “cool girl” in society.

These photos now exist in the world, and they’re not going away. But as feminists, fans of Lawrence, or just culturally progressive people, we can decide not to align our reactions with the hacker’s intent. In the end, it’s not Lawrence’s job to correctly “play,” and thus defuse, this potential scandal. Instead, let it be our task to perform the difficult but necessary labor of not being scandalized at all.

The only way to prevent a market for these type of photos is to stop treating them, and the “secrets” they reveal, as revelatory or scandalous. They don’t tell you anything new about Lawrence. They don’t make you think differently about her. You know why? Because sexuality isn’t, and shouldn’t be, a dirty secret. In her public appearances and interviews, Lawrence has never attempted to make it so. And just because it’s private doesn’t mean it’s dirty — but that’s an algebra that the scandal machine has labored tirelessly to invert.

in the bad olden days of yore, poor Vanessa Williams had to wander the wilderness (show business wise) after her 'lesbian' photos came to light in the lad mags and she was Miss America. Eventually she had a hit singing career down the road

You are just asking for someone to steal it. Don't blame the person pick-pocketing, they are just trying to make a few dollars like a normal person. And you just have it right there for the taking.

Jennifer Lawrence Shown Naked Photos Of Herself By Producers To Encourage Diet

...

Jennifer said: “It was just the kind of s**t that actresses have to go through. Somebody told me I was fat, that I was going to get fired if I didn’t lose a certain amount of weight. They brought in pictures of me where I was basically naked, and told me to use them as motivation for my diet. They thought that because of the way my career had gone, it wouldn’t still hurt me.”

She added in a fiery tone, ’If anybody even tries to whisper the word “diet”, I’m like, “You can go f*** yourself.”‘

Is that she's been in the two most recent X-Men movies. I have no idea of who she is, nor do I care.

What I care about is that it seems once again Apple's lax security via their "helpful" options like iCloud or remote wipe device have been poorly implemented.

It scares me that Apple wants to get into mobile payments, given that some basic security procedures have been missed by Apple.

I accept that some people like the people who did these hacks suck as human beings. But I expect that companies who have my data will protect it.

I only think she is naive for storing them online and/or trusting that anything online is safe.

Tough and public lesson for her to learn.
