Texting driver recovering from buttocks impalement

ELIZABETH, CO - Doctors say it's remarkable that a woman from Elizabeth survived a crash that she blames on texting and driving.

Her trauma surgeon, Dr. Chris Winters, says Christina Jahnz is among the lucky ones after being impaled by a guardrail pole.

Dr. Winters says he was in his office last Wednesday at Parker Adventist Hospital when he received a call that a patient was in the emergency room and needed his care. He and his crew immediately took x-rays and examined the way in which the pole entered her body.

"Looking at the trajectory of the pole, it was fairly apparent that it was relatively peripheral. With a different direction of the pole it could have caused life threatening injuries," Dr. Winters explained. "Had that trajectory started just a few inches more to the right it would have gone squarely through her pelvis."

How does one get impaled in the ass by a railing while driving a car at slow speeds?

and a shard comes up through the floorboard and seat, both of which aren't really that thick...

Did the hospital really have to show a photo to the news? I hope to god they got that woman's approval...

I agree the photo was disturbing. I think it was a questionable thing to show it in the news.

It tends to get the point across to people in a way that words just don't. Showing that photo and the phrase "this could be you", would probably get a few people to stop texting while driving.

I support even more gruesomeness for actual offenders.

Especially teenaged offenders.

Get caught doing anything that could injure or kill someone else and earn yourself a trip to the local ER or morgue to view the results of self-centered stupidity.

But damn!

As for those questioning impalement like this - a search of the web finds many others from car accidents. It does happen. She is extremely lucky that she didn't suffer far more severe injury.
