On a Friday evening at Veterinary Emergency Services where I work 11/05/10 is where Bentley's story begins. Around 9pm Bentley's first owners bring in a 9 week old boxer puppy for difficulty walking (ataxia), and vocalizing as if in pain. After a brief history from his owners our doctor on duty wanted Bentley checked for antifreeze toxicity, the test was done and immediately popped POSITIVE. What this meant for Bentley was either 72 hours of hospitalization or humane euthanasia, Bentley's owners opted euthanasia due to financial constraints. As the employee who had been with this sick puppy from the moment he came in I couldn't allow it, Bentley's owners signed all rights over to me! Now I'm the proud owner of a 9 week old puppy that may or may not survive the next 72 hours of treatment, after a long anxious weekend Bentley SURVIVED and has been a well loved member of our family since! To return his gift of life, Bentley is a blood donor dog at my clinic to help others in need!

(13,466 posts)And what a handsome boy. I am so glad for happy dog story endings. The specter of anti-freeze scares me badly. We had a scare a year and a half ago when I walked our dog after a rainstorm and she began throwing up uncontrollably afterward. The emergency clinic, thankfully, found no toxins or blockages. We still don't know what happened, but I watch her like crazy about drinking from any puddles at this point.

(656 posts)All my life, i have only owned the boxer breed and in my opinion they are the most loving dog on the planet. I would go with out before my dogs go without the food they need or the vet care they need, the sad part about boxers is they have a tendency of developing Cancer and their life expectancy is usually short.

(99,660 posts)She was still mostly a large puppy. The first 4 months were very hard to get though. One day a switch got flipped and she said I am a BIG girl now. Couldn't have asked for a better dog after that. Jasmine (Jazz) lived through a spleen rupture and surgery. At the time we though she deserved a chance at her one last year. We celebrated when she got past 3.5 years before we had to send her to rainbow bridge to wait for us.

(1,328 posts)for Bentley is wonderful.
I feel for his previous owners not being able to afford the treatment but he was very lucky you were there for him.

(15,317 posts)because they couldn't afford the bill.
I wish there was a way to remedy this. I've been to plenty of vets with very swanky offices who charge too much for everything. I was just at the vet and paid $150 for him to feel a cat's leg to make sure it was ok (thought there may have been an achilles tendon rupture). If someone told me I would have to put my puppy down because the bills would be too expensive, I don't know what I would do besides become a sobbing mass right there on the floor. Vet bills are rivaling human bills and it is causing so much suffering. And pet insurance is as bad as human insurance as well. When I looked up the possible costs for the tendon rupture, one woman said she amputed her cat's leg because it was $1200 to amputate rather than $3000 to repair the tendon. So sad.
