David and I thank each and every one of you for the outpouring of support and expressions of joy you extended to us last week in the thread announcing our wedding. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025460605
The ceremony was held at Amherst, MA., in the yard of Justice of the Peace Susan Lowenstein, a non-observant Jew that just happens to be a licensed minister thanks to the wonders of the internet. Suzie and her late husband were hippies in Haight-Ashbury (San Francisco) during the 1960's and 70's. Suzie is 87 years old.
The day was beautiful, temps in the high 70's, with a glorious sun filled sky. Three of our four sons attended the ceremony and the youngest was there, thanks to the ability to live-broadcast the ceremony to him in AZ.
The ceremony opened with a reading by our eldest son, Kenny, age 30:
Love is a great thing, yea, a great and thorough good. By itself it makes what is heavy light; and it bears evenly all that is uneven.
It carries a burden which is no burden; it will not be kept back by anything low and mean; it desires to be free from all worldly affections, and not to be entangled by any outward prosperity, or by any adversity subdued.
Love feels no burden, thinks nothing of trouble, attempts what is above its strength, pleads no excuse of impossibility. It is therefore able to undertake all things, and it completes many things, and warrants them to take effect, where those who do not love would faint and lie down.
Though weary, it is not tired; though pressed it is not straitened; though alarmed, it is not confounded; but as a living flame it forces itself upwards and securely passes through all.
Love is active and sincere, courageous, patient, faithful, prudent and very bold.
The exchange of vows was next:
We then exchanged rings. Our son Pat, age 28, was the ringbearer for David, while our son Steve, age 26 carried mine. Our rings are inscribed in Hebrew with the words, "I am my Beloved's, and my Beloved is mine" from Solomon's Song of Songs, chapter 2, verse 16
We tried loading pics to DU but haven't been successful so, we invite those interested to see them on my FB page:

Dave and I were consciously aware that many lesbians and gay men cannot, at this time, have their relationships legally recognized. To you, we dedicate this video:

(55,981 posts)We were the only ones there as the couple didn't want their families to attend. The lady judge that volunteers her time to perform marriages said after the ceremony "these are my favorite weddings", referring to the same sex marriage of my two female friends.
This was their third ceremony, the first happened 15 years previous as a quiet affair just between the two. The second was when the State of Washington allowed formal domestic partnerships. This one was important because the state of Washington officially recognizes them as married. Also, this allows one partner to be covered by health insurance from the others work, which wasn't allowed prior to this. It was a big day.
May you have a long and happy marriage.
