(9,904 posts)The real sad reality is that far too many view those days as the good ole days.
It really is heartbreaking that history so often repeats itself ...

(26,268 posts)I was thrilled to be able to walk around this amazing site. And I was so disappointed, during my second visit, to have to stay behind the barricades. But that didn't stop me from making a third visit. Absolutely at the top of the most amazing places I've visited.

(6,335 posts)It was the one day a week that they let tourists in. Fantastic experience. I dont know if they still do that or not.

(26,268 posts)Maybe it's an energy thing. Or atavistic- who knows. I've been to other henges, but none carry the same vibe. Maybe it's the Welsh stone.
No Vested Interest
(5,167 posts)a good explanation or theory of what Stonehenge was or what it meant or signified.
It was just considered a prehistoric monument of note.
It was only in later years that meaning was attached to the positioning of the stones.
I guess it took sophisticated instruments to define the relation to the sun and stars, etc.

(5,722 posts)They have special access passes available at dawn and sunset for 24 people max. where you can walk into the stones. Of course the demand far outstrips the supply. During the regular opening hours, you have to stay behind the barrier ropes. Too many idiots were chipping pieces off the rocks so they could have a little bit of history.

(25,699 posts)This is:
(Right-click "view image" for the full size)
The Hubble Ultra Deep-Field photograph. They focused the Hubble telescope on a patch of "nothing", empty pace as far as they could tell, and let it take this photo over a few days, from that little corner of nowhere.
Every mark in that image. every speck, every smudge, every dot... is an entire galaxy. Every single one. Every single galaxy pictured, like all galaxies, is packed with billions and billions of stars. Most of those stars would have planets. Some of those planets would have life. Some of those would have civilizations.
And that's just one patch of "nothing" in our line of sight. What about the next patch of "nothing," or one after that? Another sea of galaxies, pouring out of the far corners of our perceptions, again, each full of suns and worlds and who knows what else.
That is the coolest picture ever
But Obama looks pretty nice too.

(5,644 posts)that you can (and cannot) see is a galaxy! I mean blows my mind!!!

(81,320 posts)Even trying to wrap one's mind around the very idea that every little speck is an entire galaxy - I can hardly even go there! It's beyond imagining. Well, correction. ALMOST beyond imagining. But it does take me straight to "how could there NOT be life-as-we-know-it out there somewhere?"

(81,320 posts)I'm sorry to hear that the public can't do this, but I understand why. If this astonishing monument is to stay intact, you kinda have to keep it restricted. In a similar way that authorities over the Pyramids of Egypt have had to restrict tourism there. All those people touching and breathing out humid air in the interior close quarters - what's left of the embellisments on the walls is deteriorating rather tragically.

(23,156 posts)sometime in the early 70's when general visitors were still allowed inside. If I recall correctly, there wasn't grass growing right around the stones as I see in the picture here, but gravel.
I understand why the have to limit access, but it's a shame most people don't get to walk between those incredible stones.

(616 posts)We happened to visit it at summer Solstice. Not knowing about this tradition at the time, we didn't understand why there were so many oddly dressed people walking along the road. We learned about it when we reached Stonehenge. Of course, it was roped off, but still wonderful.
