http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/dana-perino-obama-stonehengeWhile her consistently indignant Fox News colleagues Eric Bolling and Kimberly Guilfoyle bashed Obama for making an impromptu visit to the mysterious site, Perino didn't join the pile-on.....
"But remember this is the White House that says they're not that worried about optics?" Perino continued. "Today, to show the President of the United States standing alone amongst the rocks, by himself ... I would have asked David Cameron or somebody to walk with him. Get some staff or have some take the pilot, whatever you have to do so you don't have to, he's standing alone. I don't think that's a good optic."
For what it's worth (probably very little), Obama was shown with others while at Stonehenge, a fact that Perino briefly acknowledged. Presumably she wanted more group photos.
Aw, c'mon, Dana. He took off the tan suit, for crying out loud!

(82,849 posts)She wasn't quite sure where the Cuban Missile Crisis took place (she guessed "Cuba" but admitted she didn't know). So when she talks about the rocks at Stonehenge, you have to give her credit for using English.
But yeah, desperation because the right wing keeps flinging dry shit at the wall and none of it sticks.

It shows him being deliberative.....he went to a place like that for solitude from the world to think!

But for Obama that's the closest to solitude he gets!

Nothing should surprise me anymore but some how, these idiots keep managing it.

Seriously, this is coming from George Bush's pathetic ditz of a Press Secretary who defended herself for not knowing what the CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS was because it 'happened before I was born.' WTF? Only FOX would give an imbecile like that a job as a foreign policy pundit. "Foreign Policy Dipshit" is more like it.

(82,383 posts)The President of the United States is a VVIP. I don't see anything wrong with the optics. It's the most important person in the world, or one of the most important people, at a very historic place. It's history that he's there.
And FFS if I went there, and it wasn't really crowded, I could get a photo of mere there alone. Anyone could.

(698 posts)As a Pagan myself, I'd hope that the President was contemplating all the crises that the world has seen in the thousands of years that Stonehenge (and the Avebury complex, which I find much more powerful) have been standing there -- and that the world has managed to survive.

(5,810 posts)(or not doing), the critics will just pick something at random and go from there. And their fans will go along because that's what they do. They never think, never ask questions, just listen like sheep and nod their heads in agreement.
I don't know how President Obama has been able to tolerate the disrespect and the sheer stupidity he has had to endure from DAY ONE of his Presidency. I guess we just have to consider the source and so that must be his strategy, too. But I must say it does seem to have taken its toll on him. And that is a shame, a real shame. I wonder how history will treat this awful period in our nation's history.

He heard the word Stonehenge and thought that was where the republican's kept their brains. As you can clearly see in the pic above, where he is smiling and shrugging, he found nothing.

(45,319 posts)Not only were the solo photos very nice, I saw photos of the President with some English tourist family as well as with staffers from English Heritage who curate and manage the site and I was not even looking hard. No President has more often been photographed with random members of the public in casual situations than Barack Obama.
If I was President, that's exactly what I'd want to do on my way home. Stonehenge, the VIP tour. Yes please.
