Ringo Starr today told of his disgust over British jihadis being given nicknames based on The Beatles.
The drummer said he was saddened that the fanatics led by a man dubbed Jihadi John, who is suspected of beheading two American journalists had been labelled with the names of the Fab Four.
Starr, 74, told the Standard: Its bullshit. What they are doing out there is against everything The Beatles stood for.
The nicknames were revealed by a former captive, who said three Britons guarding captives in Syria had been dubbed John, Paul and Ringo due to their accents.
Starr said he was powerless to prevent the names of the band or his bandmates being attached to the fanatics. He said: If we stood for anything we never stood for that. The four of us absolutely stood for peace and love. But we are not in control. Jihadi John is being hunted by US forces after also threatening on video to behead British hostage David Haines.

(26,877 posts)Keep Rocking, Sir Ringo! Oh, wait... Ringo hasn't been knighted??? Well, that should fucking change!
Ringo Starr, 73, is appointed a Commander of Frances Order of Arts and Letters, saying at the Monaco ceremony: Im a drummer, but I can do other things. Like painting, living, breathing. (Colleague John Lennon once said, unkindly: Hes not even the best drummer in The Beatles.) Will Ringos chevalier des arts et des lettres prompt honours bigwigs here to reconsider him for a knighthood, like his former bandmate, Sir Paul McCartney?

He is such a good man, I guess he felt compelled to say something...no worries, Ringo.

(14,177 posts)I just thought that it was thick with irony that the terrorists would call them the Beatles considering they were the exact opposite of the Beatles.

(26,877 posts)...which is weird given the Beatles had Scouse accents.

(14,177 posts)It sounded different from other Brits I have heard. But, I recon to people who don't speak a English all English accents are going to sound the same more or less.

(10,858 posts)People in Liverpool are said to have Scouse accents. Scouse is a soup, with VERY little meat, lots of vegetables. At least that is how my mother made it. I was born and raised in Liverpool. Ringo was born during an air raid, by the way. I know of NOBODY who grew up in Liverpool who wants any more wars. We had lots of air raids, plenty of destruction during the war. We all carried gas masks to school when in grade school. Had an air raid shelter in the backyard, like all the neighbours.

(10,091 posts)...you could do worse than this recent, impossibly detailed book. I'm not too far into it, but it provides a vivid depiction of postwar Liverpool.

(3,208 posts)I was pretty disgusted when I saw the reference to the Beatles. Yeah, not much he can do about it, but he didn't have to speak out either. Glad he did.

No one thinks the Beatles stood for that shit.

It is the captives who gave those names and I csn understand their side.

(14,691 posts)one of the surviving Beatles finally spoke out. This ISIS/Beatles association bugged the hell out of me (an old Beatlemaniac). Each one of the Beatles set up foundations to benefit various humanitarian causes. That's far more than the ISIS nihilistic f**kheads will do in a million lifetimes.
