NFL commissioner Goodell does not rule out Ray Rice return to football: ‘He has paid the price’

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/09/nfl-commissioner-goodell-does-not-rule-out-ray-rice-return-to-football-he-has-paid-the-price/

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell suggested he would consider reinstating former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice in an interview with CBS News.

CBS This Morning host Norah O’Donnell posted statements from her interview with Goodell Tuesday evening, including one remark by Goodell saying he felt Rice “has paid the price” for his apparent attack against then-fiancee Janay Palmer this past February:

Rice was “suspended indefinitely” from the league and fired from the Ravens after TMZ posted security camera footage of him knocking Palmer out in a New Jersey casino hotel.

I think NFL is very cynical organization out for themselves only with no regard to the public or its players. Anyone who contributes a cent to NFL should really reevaluate and determine if they want to contribute to the exploitation of peoples health (players).

That said, I also hate this "zero tolerance" approach to everything. What Rice did was wrong, and he should be punished. However, I don't see how banishing someone from their livelihood for first time offense makes any sense. If you and I committed a crime, the expectation is once I serve my time/punishment, person is able to make amends, and be part of society again.

Like many first time offenders, he worked out a deal that involved a non-prison therapeutic / rehabilitative program, the completion of which would wipe the conviction from his record.

Pedophiles and rapist not so much but I do think pretty much everyone else deserves a second chance, if they have paid their debt to society or have served their punishment by their organization.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Tue Sep 9, 2014, 06:16 PM, and voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I agree with the alerter: this post is inappropriate in the extreme. Hide. I could have left it, if the poster had not talked about the woman this awful way. But as it is, HIDE.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Sorry, I disagree with Juror #2
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I'm voting to leave it alone for a couple of reasons.

First, the poster's avatar -- this is a football fan. That should be brought into the mix. Football is a violent sport, and that culture of contained/controlled violence spills over, not just into the players' private lives but into the spectators' lives and perspectives.

Second, I think there's room in the discussion for the members to deal with the sentiments expressed. I don't like the language used either, and I'm not sure I agree with the assessment. But I'm also not sure I disagree. We're able to joke and sneer and wink at a "trophy wife" but women are called names because they look for a partner who can offer them wealth, status, prestige? That's part of the double standard that applies here.

And third, maybe someone will bring up the fact that it's all going to hinge on how much the NFL stands to make, in cold hard cash, from Ray Rice. They let Michael Vick back in, didn't they?

If both organizations were serious about domestic violence, he and his ilk would have been booted from the league on the first offense - especially one captured on film.

My feeling about all of this is that they all wanted to believe his b.s. explanation and sweep it under the rug with a bogus contrition presser and a two game suspension. But once TMZ aired the actual incident, his story fell apart and the higher ups were embarrassed for getting caught in a half assed investigation that was never intended to get to the truth. The big shots were exposed, so someone had to take the fall and they fired Ray Rice.

He'll go to counseling. He'll keep his nose clean. His wife will continue to support him. He'll apologize over and over again. The fury with the public will calm down (as it did with the Vick). And someone is going to need a running back and will be willing to give him a shot.

We've seen this cycle before many times. It's not new.
