Government funding vote postponed

By Cristina Marcos

A vote was originally slated for Thursday. But after the White House made a late request to Congress to include an authorization to arm Syrian rebels to fight the Sunni militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the continuing resolution (CR), House leadership chose to delay a vote.

"Given the severity of the situation and the need the need for all members to properly evaluate the president's request, the House will postpone consideration of the continuing resolution which was originally scheduled tomorrow," McCarthy said on the House floor.

The postponement of the vote on the stopgap funding bill to avoid a shutdown on Oct. 1 comes hours before President Obama's address to the nation Wednesday night.

"We stand ready and willing to listen to the president," McCarthy said.

Put off the vote for a couple of weeks, schedule votes on some urgent bills to name some Post Office branches, and oh yeah, we haven't voted to "repeal" "Obamacare" since we got back from our latest vacation, and there's that symbolic vote on a non-binding resolution to condemn the President for getting a war prisoner released, then the vote on the resolution of appreciation to Eric Cantor for all his wonderful service, then finally another symbolic vote castigating the President for not getting anything done.

Whoof! A fine day's work, everybody. Let's break for cocktails. We'll be back on September 17.
