ISIS Threat: Fear of Terror Attack Soars to 9/11 High, NBC News/WSJ Poll Finds
The nation is on edge in the wake of brutal beheadings of journalists by Islamic extremists with more Americans saying the United States is less safe now than at any point since 9/11, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll shows.
The exclusive poll reveals that 47% of Americans believe the country is less safe now than before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Thats a significant increase from even a year after the twin towers fell when in September 2002 just 20% of the country said the nation was less safe. The level of fear across America also is up substantially from last year when 28% felt the same way.
<...>
The new poll also found that more than six in 10 respondents believe that taking military action against the Islamic militant group ISIS is in the nations interest.

(37,364 posts)the very same people would be yelling MIHOP or LIHOP again. Funny how that works. I don't think ISIL is an immediate threat but I'm not naive enough to think that they are no threat at all.

(12,017 posts)people for some damned reason or other can't seem to see the very statement that you make, "I don't think ISIL is an immediate threat but I'm not naive enough to think that they are no threat at all" as reality or even plausible. ISI(S/L) either have to be the ultimate boogey men capable of ending all life as we know it or they have to be completely benign like a hypoallergenic kitten. There can be no middle ground... it's NUTZ, I tell ya... nutz.

(381 posts)Who this poll asked. Fox News watchers? Or perhaps it's how the questions were posed. Somehow I think the WSJ is very happy with the results. Anyway, I find it very hard to believe that most Americans want to go back to war in the Middle East!

(21,745 posts)Any of the following things are more likely to happen than you getting killed in a terrorist aettck;
You are more likely to get struck by lightning,
Killed by a shark
Hit by a car while crossing the street,
Dying in some other kind of a car accident,
Shot by accident,
Shot on purpose,
Contract Ebola,
Drown in a swimming pool, or
Drown in your bathtub.
So, you better just better hide in corner and not come out till we get "terror level: green"
See ya

(94,608 posts)Sanders: "ISIS is a danger to the entire region and to the world. The international community must work with the U.S.
Warren: "ISIS is growing in strength. It has money, it has organization, it has the capacity to inflict real damage. So when we think about a response we have to think about how to destroy that,"

(94,608 posts)12 of us met her for lunch, in support of Michelle Nunn and Bruce Braley. Discussion involved reforming school loan policies (her view is that if we can get a bill out of the Senate, it will be hard for Republicans to argue against reform); the Middle East/ISIS situation (cautious but understands the need for a response); holding bank management responsible for the fiscal downturn (she understands but doesn't think there's a practical way to go after them); and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac reform (thinks the current rules support addressing the problem of larger mortgage holders over poorer ones who effectively lose all home value).
And, as I said, still not running for President.
Laelth
(32,017 posts)I hope she's right about the Republicans in the House feeling compelled to back student loan reform, but I have my doubts. For that matter, I fear there are too many Democrats in the Senate who would vote against anything that might hurt the financial sector, but Elizabeth Warren is the best person we have to pursue this matter, and I wish her well.

(23,671 posts)Instead of giving the MIC corporate propaganda word for word they should define the actual size of the threat ISIS poses, that their numbers are far smaller than we are led to believe.

Now with their Saudi funding (9/11 only cost $750k) they could upgrade but that is a big sudden jump.

They have the picture of someone getting their cut off painted for them endlessly and they think, "My God! That COULD happen to ME!"
This poll looks like it was done to coincide with the re-writing of the W story. The press loves them some W exploiting 3,000 who burned to death that day.

(39,343 posts)Last time it was Nick Berg, this time it was two kidnapped journos and BOOM, we're ready for another war. Could we be more easily duped into war? I doubt it.
ISIS is a joke, started by a guy who came late to the game and couldn't fight in the Mujahideen and didn't get along with the original Al Qaeda, so he started his own group of a few rag tag leftovers, but now they have been given credibility as a legitimate boogieman that we will throw billions of dollars of bombs and soldiers at. Why, because they kidnapped (or bought) two journalists and we're so outraged that we're hard on for another war.
This shit is getting damned repetitive with predictable outcomes. My friends and family who are serving in the armed forces are running out of room on their uniforms because of all the campaign medals and ribbons.
I was against the last two wars, against this one, and will be against the next one and the one after that.
Fuck it all to hell

(29,047 posts)Before Obamacare, there were way more deaths from lack of insurance each year than 9/11. The deaths from our response to 9/11 were much greater than 9/11.
I know I'm supposed to think 9/11 was the worst and scariest thing evah, but I don't.
