Just drove by my local Verizon store and saw a line around the store. I immediately let out a chuckle.
People love their gadgets... me...I can wait.

(14,449 posts)It works and does what I need so I haven't had the desire to update. Apple makes a stellar product which is part of the appeal.

(23,720 posts)Do you know any people that are standing in line for it? I don't. Does anyone know anyone personally that spent the night outside in line waiting or a silly phone?

(56,582 posts)A line of 800 people is amazingly long, and the chance that you know a given 800 people in a decent-sized city is vanishingly small.

(23,720 posts)I was asking if anyone knew among their friends and acquaintances.
Among my friends and acquaintances, I know no one who even spoke about the new I-phone let alone mention that they were going to go stand in line waiting for the store to open to get one.

I bought an older model direct from Apple and had the cell company install their sim card, a little over a year ago and I think I will hang on to it for the next couple of years. When you buy the phone outright, I find that one is a bit less interested in chasing the latest and greatest.

(22,271 posts)Last year I happened to be at the AT & T store with my husband and asked the clerk if they had a good deal on a smart phone (espoused one was getting one and I wanted one too but we couldn't afford two). He replied that, since the iPhone 5's had just come out, they were selling the iPhone 4's for $1.00. Those of you who still have 4's might be able to get a deal for a 5 with your carrier.

(6,594 posts)I used to work in consumer electronics as an engineer. Part of what I did was oversee the testing of CE products. There were many, many, many (a LOT) of times we found problems with new products & the manufacturer would tell us they would fix it with a running change after 50,000 units, sometimes 100,000 units.
If I want a new CE product I make sure it's been on the market at least 6 months before I buy it. The people who line up to get the first units off the line are just asking for problems, those will be the most bug & defect-laden products.

(3,744 posts)i have learned never buy a new model right away and wait a few months for a few batches so they work the bugs out. I have a 5 now but will wait to upgrade.

(5,662 posts)How insecure do you have to be to keep popping up in every bloody Apple thread putting people down for being enthusiastic about a product. Grow the f'ck up people.
I would never wait in line for concert tickets or sports tickets or to get a body part signed by a famous person but that doesn't mean people who do are idiots. It means that they're into something I'm not that into. That's not actually a crime or an indication of their intelligence. If they want to spend their own damn money on it, it's none of my business.
We need more enthusiasm and happiness in the world, not less.

(9,900 posts)After many years of not carrying one, my wife decided to get a cell phone due to a trip she is taking with her friend next month. We have three phones with verizon, and we're going to add Alley (my wife) to the plan with the new phone first being offer to our daughter as a birthday present (actual B-D next month).
She declined holding out for a car next month when she turns 18 and finally gets her license. So off to the verizon store we go even though I had just got home an hour earlier from a couple of weeks on the road. We get there and see a cordoned off area with about 5-6 people standing in line.
A store employee asks me to fill out a short form asking me if I am a new customer or adding a line and which phone I wanted.
We (my wife and I) found out from the people who got in line behind us that today was the first day the iPhone 6's were being offered, and that even though the local Apple store was out do stock already there was still a huge line (50 or so people).
It took about 15 minutes before we had a store rep bring us in, the only hitch being that the 16gb phones were out of stock so I had to pay extra for the 64gb model.
The first thing I noticed with the phone is the computing power runs my fantasy football site noticeably better then my 5c, which is now Alley's. Also the video chat, camera, and sound is also quite improved over the 5c.
I am fairly new to Apple products, introduced through using iPads as a very portable personal internet/communication device and especially, as a tool for my job as a trucker.
Say what you will about Apple products, I have found them to be solid, trouble free, and very versatile communications platforms.

(22,000 posts)They are too expensive. I had a regular cell phone since I started using one in 2001 and finally got an android phone last December. My last phone was 5 years old when I retired it and it still works(yeah I'm cheap). The main reason was so that I could use Skype as I have a phone number back in the US where people can call me here in Korea.
Jon Stewart was making a crack the other day about people spending too much of their life looking at their cell phone. He hit the nail on the head about that.

My phone on the wall in my house hasnt rang or been used in 5 months.

(2,068 posts)For many, the cellular phone capability is secondary to its capability as a digital communication device that doubles as a computer, game console, GPS and instant link to all friends and foes. Most communication involves no voice, but text, VM and FB posts. Welcome to the future.

(33,224 posts)When I consider all the functionality baked into such a small device, (dig camera, watch, e-reader, laptop, pda, mp3 player, phone, pager, gps) it's like magic. I'm old enough to consider each of its constituent functions to be pretty novel.
But the functional differences between a cheap smartphone and an expensive one are subtle.

(5,662 posts)What I use all the time is the GPS and some of the other apps. It's basically a little computer you carry around with you. It was a total life saver when I was apartment hunting in a strange city with no car. I could pull up the real estate listings, map them and find my current position relative to the place I was looking for. I do site visits for my job and don't have GPS in the company car so it's a great help there too. And it's great for finding restaurants, shops, movie times, etc. when you're on the go.
At bus stops, you can type in the stop number and it will tell you what time all the next buses are coming, even out in the sticks. You can pull up all the route info, etc. I've also got a quiz app on my phone to kill time until the bus comes. Or I can read the news/check DU.
It's also great as a back-up when my computer isn't working for whatever reason. I was able to look up the service centre on my phone and book the computer in for repairs. And then I could still check emails and do some important financial transactions at home while the computer was being fixed instead of having to schlepp to the library or furtively do personal stuff at work.
I was a late, late adopter (still had a very basic flip phone until 2012) but I'm completely hooked on my iPhone now.

(115,735 posts)There must be some cachet for being the first to have these things that I totally don't get. I have an iPhone; I like it; but I was perfectly happy to wait until I could just waltz into the Apple Store one afternoon when there wasn't a crowd and just buy the damn thing like any other bit of merchandise.
I used to know somebody who always had to be the first to have the latest new thing. Never understood why it was such a big deal for her, but she was sort of a show-off in other respects as well so I guess it was consistent with her personality.

(24,007 posts)...started college. I knew he was much more likely to answer a text than a call of a voice mail. His voice mail message even says, "Hi, this is Taylor. Don't leave a message.
I had a little flip phone for just shy of 6 years. One of the things I liked about it was that it reminded me of the original series Star Trek communicators. Nerdy, I know. I kind of miss it.
My "smart" phone, an HTC Evo, is smarter than I am. I am somewhat techno-challenged, and still don't know everything it does. I just now, after 3 years, finally got around to recording a personal greeting on the voice mail function. It does take fine pictures of all our cats -
