Police are investigating a reported color-coded system for drugging young women at a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee fraternity after three female students and one male had to be hospitalized for extreme intoxication. According to the police report, members of the UWM chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon drew different colored X-marks on the hands of visitors black for men, red for women at a house party last weekend. The red marks allowed female guests access to different beverages, which were likely spiked with at least one date rape drug; the male student who was hospitalized claimed he drank from his female friends cup.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that police responded to multiple calls to an on-campus dormitory early on Saturday morning, where they discovered several students blacked out, so intoxicated they could barely stand. All said they had been drinking at the TKE house, and others who attended the party told law enforcement officials that they saw bartenders mixing some drinks conspicuously under the bar, returning cloudy vodka-based drinks to guests. So far, one UWM student likely a member of TKE has been arrested. The fraternity was investigated last year on three sexual assault charges, the Journal-Sentinel reports, and the most recent investigation has prompted university officials to take action: We are deeply concerned about these allegations because the safety of our students is our No. 1 priority, UWM spokesman Tom Luljak said Thursday. Our police are aggressively pursuing this investigation to determine exactly what happened and who may be involved.
UWM on Thursday suspended the fraternitys affiliation with the university for at least as long as it takes for police to conduct their investigation, Luljak said. Once the investigation is completed, additional actions could be taken by the university, he said. The fraternity house is a private residence, which means the university has no authority over what happens there. UWM, however, does control the fraternitys affiliation with the university and its members affiliation with the university.
Apparently, the alleged system of color-coding laced drinks for female students was not surprising to some visitors. From the police report: Police followed up later with the women who were severely intoxicated. One told officers that a Facebook posting said Tau Kappa Epsilon had tried to roofie women that is, give women a date rape drug that renders them unconscious during the party the night before. She recalled a fraternity member got upset when she went behind the bar to pour drinks and was physically removed. She also told officers she had a weird feeling and sensation prior to blacking out. http://www.salon.com/2014/09/19/college_fraternity_allegedly_used_color_coded_system_to_roofie_girls_at_parties/

(31,849 posts)prosecute the members of the fraternity who were involved, which the actively participated, or knew about the scheme and said nothing..
Believe it or not, there are Fraternities that do not engage in such behavior; and there are, likely, members of THAT fraternity and in THAT house that don't/wouldn't stand for that conduct.

(33,688 posts)I was in a fraternity (Delta Tau Delta) in the early 1980s for a couple of years. Our national was extremely no-nonsense and well ahead of the curve. The totality of our "hazing" during initiation week was having to sleep in the TV room with 15 other moderately smelly guys and not being able to set foot in the house between 9 am and 4 pm followed by mandatory attendance at a beer blast at week's end. "Real" hazing had been strictly forbidden some years before and chapters got the death penalty for it. Shit like this never would have crossed the mind of anyone in my chapter, much less been acted upon.
Our national had yanked several charters the year before I was a freshman and everyone in the house knew that any bullshit and we would be kicked out of the national faster than you could blink your eyes.
ETA - Some "brothers" in this house need to see the inside of the Big House.

(13,184 posts)The #1 date rape drug is alcohol.
I find it somewhat ludicrous when I read stories about products that test for date rape drugs in drinks. Do they test for alcohol?

(7,745 posts)The title should be "College students got drunk". Nothing in the article would indicate that anything different happened.

(32,034 posts)Guess what happens after being drunk? Passing out! And when you've got horny young men with passed-out young women at a party...shit can happen. The devil's in the details, and I'm sorry to know you aren't willing to open your mind.

(7,745 posts)Are you suggesting that the students in the OP are sexual predators because they served alcohol?
"Are you denying that sexual predators lure their victims with alcohol?"
No.
alp227
(32,034 posts)The students are not sexual predators merely because they served alcohol. They are sexual predators because of their intent in serving alcohol - not to mention the possibility of spiked drinks too!
Taitertots
(7,745 posts)And there is no evidence that any of the drinks were spiked.

(13,184 posts)So far there is no evidence that anything was spiked with anything other than alcohol.
There is no allegation that anyone was sexually assaulted.
The article linked to reports that blood tests showed several victims were way drunk, not doped.
People have been getting shit-faced at college parties since, well, forever.

(32,034 posts)Did you even read the article? There can't be good intentions if women are being targeted with different drinks. Getting shitfaced one thing, being targeted by sexual predators another.
