Mitt Romneys latest canine controversy involves his bundler Fred Malek who was arrested over 50 years ago in conjunction with an incident where a dog was killed and barbecued in an Illinois park. Mr. Malek is hosting a fundraiser for the Romney campaign on Monday in honor of Ann Romneys birthday. Dogs Against Romney, the stealth PAC backed group dedicated to dogging Mr. Romney about the 1983 incident where he put his Irish Setter on the roof of his car, sent a press release this morning pointing out Mr. Romneys upcoming fundraiser is hosted by fellow animal abuser Fred Malek.
Mr. Malek, who was 22-years-old at the time, was one of five men arrested in August 1959 after police in Peoria, Illinois found them around a grisly scene in a public park where a dog had been skinned, disemboweled and barbecued on a spit. Charges against Mr. Malek were eventually dismissed after one of his companions testified they were solely responsible for killing the animal and attempting to cook it. In 2006, Mr. Malek told Washington Post columnist Colbert King he and the other men arrested at the site of the canine cookout were drunk out of their minds at the time and that he merely watched the proceedings and was in no position to stop them. This explanation has not satisfied Dogs Against Romney.

(3,576 posts)It's his malarkey LDS faith. How Mormons treated the Native Americans is even worse...
"As the Mormon population grew, tensions escalated. Infertile soil and a lack of water made it impossible to quickly create dense, sedentary settlements, so Young sent newcomers farther from Salt Lake City. Unwilling to change plans, he advised against provoking the Native Americans, but soon allowed ruthless punishment of any Indian caught stealing or harming a settler or his property."
"In a short time, church leaders authorized attacking American Indians who refused to give up their resources without a fight. Church leaders argued that Native Americans who resisted were actually rejecting Christ's message and, by refusing, justified retribution."

Mormons will tell any tale to suit their needs, that's why Romney is an Etch a Sketch.

(12,008 posts)I'm not a fan of any religion, but I've certainly known mormons who love their pets and other animals as much as anyone else.
I know that it's easy to make fun of Mormons (FLDS is something else - they're truly frightening, but also recognized as criminals), but their beliefs aren't really any more or less crazy than the other major religions. I also know that the history of the church is fucked up, but so is the history of other religions - just read up on all of the slaughter condoned by God in the Old Testament.

(6,440 posts)...but it's not "Mitt Romney and animal cruelty", it's "a guy hosting a fundraiser for Mitt Romney and animal cruelty". Or do you think Romney deliberately sought him out purely on the basis of the dog-barbecuing incident? I'm all for keeping the story about Romney's own treatment of his dog in the news, but suggesting that this forms some sort of pattern is just stupid.

(13,467 posts)I don't care if they were "drunk out of their minds", it takes a serious fucking psychopath to do something like that. At 22 I was drunk out of my mind PLENTY and it still didn't make me a psychopath.
These conservative pieces of shit are PSYCHOPATHS.

(82,849 posts)DUers of a certain (ahem) age should recognize that name. Hatchet man in the Nixon administration, Malek was the man who acquiesced to Nixon's obsession with Jews in figuring out who was Jewish in the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS kept putting out accurate jobs and other economic figures that showed what a failure Nixonomics was, and Nixon was incensed with the liberal bias of the facts. Malek provided Nixon and his dark twin henchmen Haldeman and Ehrlichman with the ammunition they needed to oust two veterans of the Bureau, and presumably cow those remaining.
Malek was also the eager hack who carried out Nixon's desire to see more politicization at government agencies, so that the bureaucracy more closely reflected the philosophy of the Executive. Malek's standard excuse for his involvement in all kinds of chicanery is to plead that he wasn't that involved, and he was in no position to stop whatever was going on. It's served him well throughout his crooked career, and it looks like it will carry him through the present campaign. May it be his last, and this career agent of corruption can leave the halls of government forever.

(1,325 posts)I remember this guy being involved in McCain's 2008 campaign, and yes his presence was a serious issue in the spring. That's when I first heard about him.
What will it take for Republicans to realize this guy is poison? Another odd accusation to come out?

(6,891 posts)There's cruelty to animals and there's this. What these monsters did to a dog they are capable of doing to a human. Malek and his pals should have spent the last 50 years under 24 hour custodial care.

(2,049 posts)as a vegan, I'm always amazed at the compartmentalizing people can do to be outraged at ill-treatment of a dog, while ordering bacon for breakfast. Pigs a re very similar to dogs, can feel pain, fear, loneliness, happiness, etc...yet the treatment that meat consumers contract for against these poor creatures in factory-farms is beyond appalling. I'm against ALL needless animal suffering. If those clowns had done all of the very same things to a pig, that would be perfectly normal, just like the local lions club picnic or whatever.

(8,361 posts)that dog was probably someone's faithful companion. A bunch of drunks were unlikely to have caught a wild/feral animal.
I might add that, no matter how you feel about eating meat, most folks are disgusted at the thought of eating pets - even though some people might consider them food. You don't eat loved ones.
