FBI: Mass shootings in America on the rise
A recently released FBI report has confirmed that mass shootings in America are on the rise, more than doubling in the past seven years.
Between 2000 and 2013 there were 160 active shooter situations that resulted in 486 deaths and 557 inuries. For the first six years of the study, there was an average of 6.4 incidents per year, but for the remainder of the study that number jumped to 16.4. The overall average for the period of the study was 11.4 incidences per year.
At 45.6 percent, active shooter situations are the most common at businesses and places of commerce, with schools being the second most common at 24.4 percent, the FBI reports.
The two deadliest of active shooter situations during the study both took place at schools: one during 2007 where 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech; and another at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 where a gunman killed 27 people.
