Looking for advice, please. A job that matters.
There are a lot of smart and well informed people on this site, so I thought it couldnt hurt to ask for a little help.
Background: I have a pretty good job now, one that pays and has benefits. (Actually took a few years to get into this position, as its a government job. It involves researching regulations and writing. ) And because of the large bills I have, even though Im willing to take a pay cut, if I get a new job, it must pay well.
And heres my question: My entire life Ive cared about injustice, the environment, animals, overpopulation and the suffering of innocent people. Are there organizations that will hire full time workers, and pay enough to live on? (Live in a very expensive part of the country, btw.)
Ive made a decision to change careers after 30 years. The sooner I get out, the better. Life is short. And yes, I know there are millions in a worse situation; my idea is to help some of them if I can. Thank you for your input!

(11,417 posts)I work for county government and we have departments that deal with most of the areas you mention but a lot if the work is done by contract with non profits. We call them community based organizations. We get State and Federal money and contract with the CBOs who do much of the work.

(3,580 posts)I've been a nurse for over 40 years. I still work with patients. I haven't regretted a day I've gone to work. I hope I can work until I'm 70.
As far as salary I am secure. I'll never be downsized. I'm not sure how much money you need to maintain you life style. If you have a degree there are several nursing schools that have accelerated bsn programs.

There are scores of them.
They all have staff members.

(19,877 posts)Don't pay too well. Most people take those jobs as a calling. Good luck with whatever you choose.
