The strangest, and most disheartening thing about the Twitter firestorm that erupted this week after Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen pointedly questioned Ann Romney’s fitness to serve as her husband’s ambassador on women’s economic issues was the speed with which her own party rushed to denounce her. Noting to CNN’s Anderson Cooper that Romney — a daughter of privilege who became wealthier still while married to Mitt — had “never worked a day in her life,” Rosen voiced the suggestion that she was, perhaps, less than ideally suited for relaying the financial worries and stresses of most American women to her husband’s presidential campaign. “She’s never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing, in terms of how do we feed our kids, how do we send them to school, and why do we worry about their future,” Rosen said.


Republicans counterattacked, as to be expected. But Democratic Rosen-bashing was every bit as vigorous.

Democratic strategist David Axelrod called Rosen’s words “inappropriate and offensive.”

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina tweeted: “She should apologize.”

I think that Obama can and will handle this by not going over the Rosen remark but by emphasizing his contributions to women's lives, describing the good things that have and will happen because his admin did the right thing. Then he can turn to the Republicans record and recite it. The contrast will be made but it will be out of the Rosen remark context. That's the way to handle this, IMO. It's better to make our case separately than debate on their grounds.

She's a spoiled millionaire, and she has had more opportunity than most men and women in this country to do whatever she wants simply because of wealth.

Republicans want to make hay over this, and claim that Obama hates women to deflect their proven legislation that acts against the well-being of women in this nation. We don't even need to let this happen. There is one party that is anti-women, and it is the GOP. When Democratic legislators start introducing bills that ban birth control, abortion and generally interfere with a woman and her doctor, I'll believe that it's both sides.

As it stands? False equivalency - the GOP is the anti-woman party, not the Democratic party, and I'll call anyone who says so on it expressly.

I believe the administration did the right thing by distancing themselves and removing themselves from the comment.
