$$$. Republicans thought that he would lead a serious challenge to Obama because he has money, and most importantly, he's spending less of theirs so they can fund Senatorial and Representative candidates.
No one, including Republicans, thinks he can win unless they live in Utah. The evangelical South is against him, independents think he's phony, and Republicans cringe when you say he's their candidate.
It's kind of delicious to see a Republican get used as badly as Romney is getting used. Their whole primary has been funny as hell to watch.
I think they picked Mitt because he has bucks, and they didn't want to have to fund a candidate for 2012. I think they are more focused on backing local and state candidates and that's where we all need to make sure we pay attention, too.

(39,961 posts)He can't win. The base despises him. They are letting him waste his own money because they flat don't have a candidate.

No serious candidates wanted to run in this election. All we saw in the Republican primary were fools and has-beens who know they are aging and losing name recognition and won't ever be able to run again.

(3,575 posts)The GOP knows their only hope is the economy and they feel a moderate has a better chance with independents and other moderates from both sides of the aisle.
I agree that they are concentrating on the House and Senate. The WH would just be a bonus.

(13,812 posts)I expect it to be a complete slimefest for the State level races.
Up here all the candidates are up for re-election this year and they are STILL debating the new redistricting. After witnessing the debacle of the local elections I am not in anyway confident of the State election outcomes.
