One of my favorites was his explanation of why he lied about having marched for civil rights as a young person. And he never explained why he lied about pulling over on his way to school (Harvard) to cry about the Mormon church finally allowing African Americans to be clergy. Maybe because, AFAIK, no one confronted him publicly about that one.

I read his father's wiki. Seemed like an eminently decent man, esp. for a Republican. I wonder what he'd think of Mitt if he could hear him today. My guess: he'd be embarrassed, though, like many parents, loyal to his kid anyway.
